New photo Running for office: The jogging gear worn by Boris, Gove and Hunt

Whether it is a victory lap the morning after an election win or a pre-campaign warm-up, politicians often eschew the gym in favour of pounding the streets around Westminster.

Boris Johnson was yesterday spotted on one of his regular workouts appearing to mock Theresa May as he ran through a field of wheat.

The former foreign secretary plumped for his trademark eclectic and absurd sportswear - comprising a pair of Hawaiian print trunks and a fleece - for the convenient photo opportunity.

But his sartorial choices are in stark contrast to his successor Jeremy Hunt, who favours top of the range active wear.

Fashion commentator Lucas Armitage has compared the running gear worn by top Tories and given MailOnline his verdict about the statement each politician is making - from Johnson's 'buffoon' wardrobe to Michael Gove's 'authoritative' look and Jeremy Hunt's 'audacious' get-up.

Mr Armitage said Boris Johnson 'is known for been a bit of a buffoon but in the world of PRs and image gurus, is no accidental buffoon.'

The former Foreign Secretary is a keen runner, thought to jog a couple of miles.

He added: 'Boris, like all politicians, has political advisors and teams of people to help construct every aspect of his public persona. His running attire is an example of how he loves to play up to his eccentric baffling Etonian image.

'The eclectic selection which appears to include swimwear is an odd choice for a politician who would normally want to appear well put together to display essential leadership qualities.

'In many ways his running attire shows us he revels in the image the media has given him and now feeds this and uses it to his advantage, in some ways it makes him seem so much more human than the other PR-trained robotic politicians.

'Whilst Boris may have come from an anything-but-humble begging, his humble approach has warmed up a lot of supporters.'

Of Boris' TeamGB running top, Mr Armitage said: 'From a fashion perspective this is a purely functional outfit; it displays no sense of style and little in the way of co-ordinating elements.

'Although the colours of the Union Jack give the whole thing a slightly chaotic yet patriotic feel.'

Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Michael Gove wears his spectacles while running, often teaming tennis socks with a Puma or Slazenger t-shirt.

Mr Armitage says: 'Most people would run without spectacles for obvious reasons but choosing to run with them displays a vibe he is always keeping an eye on political matters even when exercising.

'The rest of the look is unashamedly bold in colour choice, the whole look being quite authoritative.

'We need to look no further than his choice of brand for his T-shirt.

'The Puma which is the fastest predator on earth... enough said.'

Jeremy Hunt

Mr Armitage says Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt's look 'is so orchestrated it’s almost audacious.'

He can often be seen wearing high-tech, high-end Gore sportswear on his runs.

He added: 'The bold blue running top and its form fitting look display his political leanings and also his lean physical shape in one bold sartorial move.

'The shortest shorts of the bunch displaying his legs more than any other shows he is a proud runner and easily looks most at home more than any of his counterparts.

'Finishing with a sports sock and matching trainers gives the whole thing an accomplished look.'

David Cameron

David Cameron often cycled to the Commons, and would run 5k at a time.

In 2014 revealed he felt at his most anonymous when exercising in parks around Westminster, when no-one seemed to notice they were within feet of the man running the country.

He said: ‘The thing about the parks in London is its mostly full of tourists who just see some middle-aged slightly overweight man trotting past them and they just think it’s another one.’

Mr Armitage said the former Prime Minister co-ordinated to display a ‘man of the people vibe’.

He said: 'His support of charitable Sport Relief is admirable and he lets the T-shirt do the talking and keeps the rest of the look sensibly stylish and low key.

'He is wearing a smile and an affinity with doing good more than anything else.'

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
