GRIEF is deeply etched in the face of the mother of murdered toddler James Bulger.
Denise Fergus has been through the torments of hell and her agony never goes away.
Just this week, this brave woman, forced herself to watch a documentary about her son’s killers.
She wasn’t told in advance what it contained and sat in tears throughout.
At one point, when details of her son’s violent murder were revealed, she had to leave the room.
James Bulger: The New Revelations claimed fresh information about the case, and for the first time aired audio of Jon Venables, confessing to killing the two-year-old in 1993.
It was utterly chilling and I don’t know how Denise coped with hearing those words.
Her pain must have been unimaginable. Along with fellow ten-year-old Robert Thompson, Venables led James away from his mum at a busy shopping centre while she had turned her back for the blink of an eye.
They took the little one to a railway line where he suffered an appalling attack. It was the stuff of nightmares and it shocked us all.
There have been many theories as to why two boys would carry out such an evil act on an innocent child.
Over the years, their upbringing, particularly that of Venables, has been partially blamed, and the documentary went into a lot of detail about his scarred childhood, citing an incident where the killer claimed his dad made him strip naked and threatened to cut off his penis, after he suspected his son had stolen chocolates from the Christmas tree.
If true, this is obviously appalling child abuse, but poor kids who grow up in even more horrific circumstances don’t go on to kill and maim.
It’s just too easy an excuse for a complex and heinous crime.
I don’t blame her. No mother or father should ever have to bury their child, and especially not in such grotesque circumstances.
Denise had to steel herself to watch the documentary, but felt she needed to see what was being portrayed.
In her own words she “wanted to know what I was having to deal with”. It was a tortuous experience.
There isn’t a day that goes by when she doesn’t think about her dead son, and mourn the life he was prevented from having.
He might well have been married with children of his own by now, but his light was snuffed out in that gruesome murder.
Both killers are now in their mid thirties, and Thompson has gone on to rebuild his life, claiming he is a “better person” for his time in jail and has apologised for what he did to James.
Venables is another story. His identity has been changed twice since his prison release aged 18 and protecting his anonymity has cost taxpayers around £5million.
He was cautioned for possessing cocaine in 2008 and jailed for two years in 2010 after pleading guilty to possessing indecent images of children.
He was imprisoned again in February this year for 40 months for the same crime.
Now, I can understand that there is a morbid fascination about this case, but I really do think that Denise and her family need to be left in peace.
No more documentaries, no more books and no more half-baked theories.
Let her mourn her baby son without constantly adding to her pain and agony.
PRINCESS DIANA was a hands-on supporter of Centrepoint, the charity that helps young homeless people.
She would take young sons William and Harry to meet teens sleeping rough, and got her boys to experience what it was like to live on the streets.
After Diana’s death they vowed to continue her good work and have been true to their word.
This week William and his wife Kate, helped out in a homeless shelter in Barnsley as part of Centrepoint’s “Big Broth” campaign to provide hot meals to those in need.
The charity also had its annual “sleep out” this week to raise funds and awareness.
Having the royals on board gives the charity a higher profile.
We would all like to think that in a country like ours homelessness will one day end.
Sadly, I believe William and Harry will be taking their own kids to sleep outs and teaching them to be compassionate to those who are homeless and need our help.
I CAUGHT up with Jake Quickenden this week – he’s the uncrowned king of reality TV.
He kicked off on X Factor in 2014 then bounced straight into I’m A Celeb, where he was runner-up, and at the start of this year he won Dancing On Ice.
Apart from Celebrity Bake Off and Strictly there’s not much more for him to do in the rather odd world of reality TV.
And much as I’d like to see Jake, kneading dough, I prefer to admire his paso doble.
Tonight, Strictly contestants are strutting their stuff in Blackpool.
I am torn between the breathtakingly beautiful Kate Silverton and her dance partner Aljaz, and elegant paralympian Lauren Steadman and AJ.
These women are what the show is all about.
They started off with virtually no dancing experience and every week has seen them improve and grow in confidence.
They are glowing with the sheer, exuberant joy of dancing.
There could even be romance blooming between Lauren and AJ.
It’s lovely to see.
Although Faye Tozer and Ashley Roberts might technically be better performers, it’s more exciting and emotional to watch Kate and Lauren.
I can’t decide on my favourite, so will just have to vote for both of them.
NO matter from what side of the Brexit fence you are throwing rocks and hurling insults, I think we can all agree on something.
And that is that our beleaguered PM has balls of steel and more courage and integrity in her pinky than all of those who deserted her and knifed her in the back.
I would not have blamed an exhausted Mrs May for one second if she had decided to lay down the burden of high office and run gleefully through every wheat field in the land.
She could have simply buggered off and left the godawful Brexit mess to the clowns that forced it through.
Instead she has soldiered on, clung to power like a limpet and tried to fix the unfixable.
Theresa May doesn’t believe in Brexit, but she does believe in the will of the people and (tragically in my opinion) we narrowly voted to leave.
So she has tried to come up with some sort of deal, and ironically in the process succeeded in uniting our fractured country because no one is happy with what she thrashed out.
We should, however, all agree that she is an honourable woman, trying to do an impossible job to the best of her ability, but sadly with little chance of success.
If she goes, there’s no political superhero flying in to save the day.
The opposition as led by Jeremy Corbyn are a pathetic joke.
It’s an omnishambles and we deserve better.
I’M A Celebrity launches tomorrow at 9pm and, as always, the timing makes me realise I need to get my finger out and start doing the Christmas shopping.
This series is shaping up to be a proper vintage year, and whoever persuaded Noel Edmonds to sign on the dotted line should be given a pay rise. He will be TV Gold.
Noel is a proper, old-fashioned TV professional, but he’s also chippy, easily irritated and loves to win.
He has also argued with both of the ITV show’s presenters – Holly Willoughby and Declan Donnelly.
Noel has accused Dec and Ant of stealing ideas from him for their Saturday night TV shows, and described adorably sweet Holly as “aggressive, disrespectful and dishonest”.
Noel made the startling claim after he appeared on This Morning and clashed with both Phillip Schofield and Holly over his controversial comments that cancer is caused by “negative energy”.
All of that history is inevitably going to make those Bushtucker Trial interviews and the evictions rather awkward.
It will all be very different from last year, when the camp was like a scout jamboree, with everyone enjoying friendship and harmony.
Some big, bolshy, larger-than-life characters are heading into the jungle.
Harry Redknapp does not suffer fools gladly and has never actually seen the show, so he has no idea what’s in store.
MOST READ IN OPINION
John Barrowman has foolishly admitted he has a phobia of confined spaces and jumping out of planes. So I think we can all guess what sort of challenges he will be facing from the off.
John is a hoot, but can’t stop himself from showing off, which could irk some of the other contestants jostling for air time.
The show has conflict, mayhem and madness written all over it. And I, for one, can’t wait.
