New photo Costa Coffee customers vent their fury over ‘misleading labels’ on company’s Christmas toasties

VEGETARIANS have slammed Costa Coffee’s “misleading labels”, claiming they fail to mention the chain’s Christmas toastie is loaded with meat.

Complaints flooded in after the coffee giant launched its festive range three weeks ago.

Vegetarians are furious that Costa Coffee’s Christmas toastie doesn’t mention that it contains meat on the front of the packaging

On the packet, the sandwich is billed as the”Ultimate Christmas Toastie”, with “sweet cranberry sauce on cheese-topped bread”.

Based on this description, veggie customers bought and ate the toastie before noticing it contained bacon and turkey.

But this information is only disclosed on the back of the packaging, which is removed and thrown out by staff to heat the toastie, reports Somerset Live.

A picture of the packet was posted on Twitter by Nazya Fiaz, who wrote: “Major labelling issues!!! this toastie had turkey slices! However, no mention on the front packaging. Why??? Shipley Costa.”

After two days Costa apologised for any “confusion” and said the fridge labels had been updated to highlight that the toastie contains meat.

But it was not the first time a customer had flagged up the issue.

Tracey from London said: “Costa Coffee yesterday I stopped at my local Costa to have a light bite to eat and choose the ultimate Christmas cheese toastie.

“I was nearly sick as someone who doesn’t eat pork found after the first bite it had bacon and turkey in, totally ruined my experience. Not happy.

“It’s all about the information, nothing on the front of packaging letting the consumer know what meat was in the product.

“It also has bacon in it and I haven’t eaten pork for over 25 years. The front of the packaging should state what meat is contained. What is Costa Coffee going to do about it? Just saying sorry is not acceptable!!”

Drew White also pointed out the issue saying: “Contains Christmas with cranberry sauce on cheese topped bread.

“Something missing from this description I feel!”

Costa Coffe said of the toastie on Twitter: “It contains British turkey cheese-topped toastie with maple smoked bacon, sage and onion and cranberry sauce.”

But a customer pointed out that it was odd that “the word ‘turkey’ doesn’t appear on it”.

Despite Costa Coffee saying they updated their fridge labels, it has not appeared in all stores yet.
