A 14-year-old lioness has become the breakout star of David Attenborough's Dynasties following a nail-biting scene that saw her protect her newborn cubs from a herd of angry buffalo.

Sunday night's episode of the landmark BBC One series saw single mother Charm successfully drive away angry water buffalo intent on killing her two-week old babies as they fought for survival in the African Savanna.

Viewers were in awe of the 'fierce' beast with one quipping that she was 'the leader we need in these shambolic political times'.

Twitter user Stephen Phillips wrote: 'Charm is an absolute beast taking a buffalo down on her own.'

And Ellie Feehan tweeted: 'I've given it a lot of thought and I really think Charm is the leader we need in these shambolic political times.

'If anyone can bring us back from the Brexit brink, it's a lioness who can scare off a whole herd of buffalo from behind a log #charm4primeminister'.

Others were horrified to learn that the buffalo, who are herbivores, would go after the cubs. One wrote: 'Let it be known [that] buffalo are scumbags'.

Buffalo often kill lion cubs in a bid to weaken their predators, and the nail-biting scene saw a large hard approach as the two cubs cowered under a fallen tree in the Musiara Marsh oxbow, in Kenya's Masai Mara.

Charm was seen shielding her young with her body and scaring the buffalo off after a tense stand-off, foiling their attempts to trample the cubs to death.

Sunday night's installment of Dynasties followed the Marsh Pride of Kenya's Masai Mara, who had been left to fend for themselves after being abandoned by all of the adult males.

Cameras followed two adult females - Charm and her cousin Sienna - as they battled to feed and protect their eight youngsters.

Another scene saw one young male pursued by a pack of hungry hyenas, and viewers were left in tears at the sight of Charm's one-year-old son who became gravely ill after eating poisoned meat left by farmers as bait.

To protect livestock farmers in Africa sometimes use toxic meat where the lions graze, in a bid to kill them off.

Camerawoman Sophie Darlington said she and the rest of the crew – who filmed the lions for two years – were left 'absolutely devastated' by the poisoning, which affected most of the pride.

Film crew spent 18 months filming the Marsh Pride in Kenya.
