TRIBUTES are pouring in to Baroness Trumpington, the veteran Tory politician and Bletchley codebreaker who has died at the age of 96.
Adam Barker confirmed his mum’s death in a humorous tweet this evening praising a “bloody good innings”.
The Baroness’ 37-year tenure as a Tory peer included spells as a minister and a government whip.
The seasoned Lord shot to fame seven years ago after a video showed her giving a colleague the v-sign during a debate in Parliament.
When her colleague referred to her advanced age, Baroness Trumpington promptly offered him a two-fingered salute – winning her nationwide adoration.
Conservative Deputy Chairman James Cleverly also confirmed her death, writing on Twitter: “So sad to hear that code breaking, two finger wagging, Baroness Trumpington has passed away. Ma’am, we salute you.”
The pair returned to London, and became engaged in October 1953.
The politician was born Jean Barker, an heiress of a Chicago paint manufacturer.
For years a New York socialite, Jean met William Alan Barker, a British Army officer, who was wounded in Normandy on 16 June 1944.
She was forced to apply for a licence to the Solicitor-General to become the first couple in modern times to hold a wedding at the Chapel of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, which took place on 18 March 1954.
The couple had one son, Adam Campbell Barker, who was born on August 1, 1955.
Her husband became master at Eton College and later headmaster of the Leys School in Cambridge.
Jean did not stay idle for a second. She became a city councillor before serving as the Mayor of Cambridge from 1971 to 1972.
During that time she granted the Freedom of Cambridge to RAF Oakington, revived the town’s market, installed a travel centre, and built an entrance hall to the railway station.
She was best known for opening Elizabeth Bridge, the first across the Cam since medieval times, with former Conservative cabinet minister Rab Butler, High Steward of Cambridge University.
