"Many Photos" - Vauxhall owner threatens to shut Ellesmere Port plant after Brexit – risking 1,000 jobs

CAR manufacturer Vauxhall has threatened to close its Ellesmere Port plant after Brexit.

More than 1,000 workers are at risk of losing their jobs if the factory becomes unprofitable following a no deal.

Carlos Tavares, chief executive of parent company PSA, threatened to move construction to southern Europe if Brexit affects trading.

Speaking to the Financial Times, he said: “Frankly I would prefer to put it (the Astra car) in Ellesmere Port, but if the conditions are bad and I cannot make it profitable, then I have to protect the rest of the company and I will not do it.

“We have an alternative to Ellesmere Port.”

The proposed move would likely lead to the closure of Ellesmere Port, which employs 1,000 production workers.

Almost 80,000 vehicles were produced at the factory last year, including the Astra which is one of the most popular cars in the UK.

If the factory was closed, it would leave the Luton factory as Vauxhall’s last production line in the UK.

He later added: “We need visibility on customs for parts coming from continental Europe or from the rest of the world, and we need visibility on the customs for cars coming out of the UK to continental Europe.

“Those are the only things we need – everything else we’ll take care of.”

Earlier this year, the French carmaker announced it would manufacture the next generation of Astra in Ellesmere Port and another factory in Germany only if the UK avoided a no-deal Brexit.

In a statement, PSA confirmed its decision on the future of the plant would be based on the “final terms of the UK’s exit from the European Union”.

“PSA Groupe has put in to place a comprehensive ‘no-deal’ contingency plan that covers human resources, taxation, customs, logistics, production, regulation, supply chain and IT.”

Last week, Nissan announced it would axe more than 12,500 jobs worldwide.

The news is a blow to workers at the Sunderland plant, which currently employs around 7,000 people.

Earlier this year, Japanese car giant Honda announced it would shut down its Swindon plant by 2021.
