The thread was kicked off by celebrity enthusiast Rachel Marshall from London, who revealed she had mistakenly told Lady Gaga she resembled 'Mary' Antoinette- instead of Marie.

After asking followers for their own embarrassing experiences, the topic quickly went viral, with other fans tweeting their cringe-worthiest moments.

One red-faced user revealed their father had asked an obliging Ed Sheeran for a beer after mistaking him for a waiter.

Another follower remembered thanking former US president Barack Obama profusely for shaking his hand, in a series of hilarious stories.

Meanwhile an awkward fan mistakenly left Rihanna hanging when she tried to high-five her, and another follower told Cher she should 'turn on the air conditioning' as she was sweating

Morgan Knox recalled how she asked Demi Lovato for a hug at a meet and greet event, who reportedly 'smiled and turned away'

Adding to the awkward moments, Twitter user Lilia got tongue tied upon meeting singer Brendon Urie and uttered 'You're the reason I'm a lesbian' instead of 'you're the reason I came out'

Elsewhere user Paige surely left Matt Damon less than reassured when he asked if she was okay with her suitcase on a plane, to which she said: 'Trying not to hit your kids in the face'

Keen runner Brie Mele ran into Will Smith in Miami and told him she thought he was a meteorologist as he was pointing at the sky

Elsewhere Michael Buble was not impressed when Katelyn Ni Diabeheis told him her father's nickname for the star was 'Mickey Bubbles'
