EMILY Blunt’s Mary Poppins Returns has been praised as ‘practically perfect in every way’ by critics after early previews.
The long-awaited sequel, starring Meryl Streep, hits cinemas in December and held its premiere in LA this week.
And it seems that the return of the magical nanny is set to be a smash hit with critics calling it a ‘show-stopper’.
Some have even said it is in the running for an Oscar with writer and director Ben Mekler, tweeting: ‘The Oscar race just got a BIG shake-up, because #MaryPoppinsReturns is sheer joy.”
Frozen star Josh Gad wrote: “Believe the hype. Wow.”
Rotten Tomatoes Editor Jacqueline Coley said the “awards landscape has been turned on its head” after watching the film, calling it an “instant classic”.
And critic Kyle Arango wrote: “Mary Poppins Returns is practically perfect in every way.
“I felt as if I was transported to a world where anything is possible.”
Film Critic Zach Pope said the “magic is back” and film-maker EJ Moreno added: “The film is a showstopper.”
Emily, 35, stars as the iconic Mary with Ben Whishaw, 37, Emily Mortimer, 46, Colin Firth, 58, and Meryl Streep, 69.
Dick Van Dyke, a star of the original 1964 film, makes a cameo.
But Dick, 92 — chimney sweep Bert in the first film — insisted he would not be reviving his ridiculed “Cockney” accent.
He will instead be portraying elderly bank boss Mr Dawes Jr.
The original Mary, Dame Julie Andrews, 82, won’t be making an appearance.
The sequel to the acclaimed 1964 film Mary Poppins is set in 1930s London, 25 years after the original.
