New photo Asda instigates third fuel price war in as many weekends as it cuts petrol and diesel by 2p

For the third weekend on the trot - and the fifth time since the end of October - Asda has promised to reduce the cost of fuel at its forecourts.

The supermarket has announced it will trim the price of petrol and diesel by 2p a litre from Saturday 1 December following continued decreases in wholesale fuel costs.

It means that drivers across the country will pay no more than 116.7p per litre on unleaded and 127.7p on diesel at one of the supermarket's 319 filling stations.

Sainsbury's has since confirmed it will also reduce fuel prices by 2p a litre, with Morrisons and Tesco expected to follow suit.

Asda has been spearheading fuel cuts in the last month, triggering a battle between the supermarkets to reduce petrol and diesel prices to attract more customers.

In fact, Asda has announced five fuel price drops since October 26, which collectively have knocked petrol down by 11p per litre and diesel by 7p.

Confirming the latest fuel price reduction, Asda's senior fuel buyer, Dave Tyrer, said: 'With Christmas just around the corner, we're pleased we can do our bit to make our customers' hard-earned cash go a little further.

'Our new national price cap of 116.7p per litre on unleaded and 127.7p per litre on diesel will be welcomed by the millions of drivers across the country and put money back in their pockets.'

Previous pump price cuts by Asda in the last month have encouraged the other big four supermarkets to make similar reductions at their forecourts.

Sainsbury's has already matched the December 1 reductions, trimming 2p off a litre of unleaded and diesel across all of its 314 forecourts.

David Pegg, fuel buying manager for Sainsbury's, said: 'As we head into December and the run up to Christmas we are committed to helping our customers live well for less, whether they're stocking up on groceries and gifts or refuelling their cars.

'That's why we're dropping the price of both unleaded petrol and diesel by 2p per litre across every single one of our forecourts from tomorrow [Saturday 1 December].'

Morrisons and Tesco have yet to confirm if they will emulate Asda and Sainsbury's, though the former has already announced earlier this week that motorists who spend £50 or more in Morrisons stores between now and December 9 will be rewarded with an extra 10p off fuel.

RAC fuel spokesperson Simon Williams welcomed the news that fuel prices were being reduced for the third weekend in a row and praised Asda for being at the forefront of lowering running costs for car owners.

However, he questioned if supermarkets were really embroiled in a 'fuel price war', as live data shows that retailers have plenty of room to pass on more significant savings to drivers.

'This is yet more good news for motorists but despite Asda cutting their prices regularly the other supermarkets are sadly lagging way behind,' he said.

'There is often talk of a supermarket price war over fuel, but this couldn't be further from the truth at the moment.

 Simon Williams, RAC fuel spokesman

'The current UK average price of petrol is 125.43p and 134.41p for diesel. RAC Fuel Watch data shows that this should be at least 8p lower for unleaded and 6p lower for diesel.

'If retailers do the right thing then it could really soon be Christmas at the pumps.

'Asda's nearest competitor is currently charging 2.5p more for a litre of unleaded whereas the most expensive of the big four supermarket retailers is charging over 4p more per litre.

'Consequently, the UK average price of petrol is not falling at the rate it should be due to the dip in the value of oil.

'The sad reality for drivers is that the majority of fuel retailers are taking advantage of the falling wholesale price by pocketing the savings instead of passing them on at the pumps.'
