A Rugby World Cup winner has been shot and injured in South Africa after shielding a former teammate and several children during an attempted robbery.

Ex-international Naka Drotske was hit three times and lost almost a third of his blood during the attack by three armed men on the outskirts of Pretoria.

He reportedly jumped up to stop the attackers and protect his brother Tinus Drotske, Tinus's children and former Springboks teammate Os du Randt from being hurt.

Tinus said his brother had 'saved my children's lives' after the attack on Thursday night, Times Live reported.

Naka Drotske, who played as a hooker, is said to be in a stable condition in intensive care and out of immediate danger after the attack.

Tinus Drotske said: 'Naka jumped up and stormed them, and then they shot him three times, and then they luckily fled. The children, no-one else was harmed.'

Naka was reportedly hit in the chest, stomach and arm and lost a third of his blood while Du Randt hurried him to hospital.

Drotske underwent surgery immediately upon arrival at the hospital and will require a further operation on an injured arm.

Du Randt and the others at the scene escaped harm. No arrests had yet been made, police captain Kay Makhubele told reporters.

Both players were part of the South Africa squad who won the World Cup in 1995 in an emotional triumph soon after the end of apartheid.

'From what we hear he is stable and they think it is OK,' Cheetahs Rugby CEO Harold Verster said of Drotske, a former player at the club.

Verster later told radio station OFM: 'The news was absolutely shocking. This morning we got together as Cheetahs family and we had the team together and said that we were thinking about Naka and Os and their families.

'We wish them all the best and our thoughts are with them.'

While Verster was unsure on the full details, he did attempt to shed some more light on the harrowing incident.

'What I do know is that numerous robbers entered the house while they were busy eating and sprayed them with pepper spray,' Verster added.

'A fight ensued and it went out onto the veranda or lawn, and when one of them drew a firearm to fend them off, Naka was shot. After that, they ran away.'

Drotske played 26 times for South Africa from 1993-99 and was part of the squad that lifted the World Cup on home soil, though he only featured in one game against Samoa.

He was the starting hooker for the 1999 tournament in which the Springboks lost to Australia in the semi-finals but beat New Zealand to finish third.

He later spent three years with London Irish and was coach of South African Super Rugby side the Cheetahs from 2007-15.
