THE Bank of England is due to put painter JMW Turner on its new £20 note in 2020.
Here we look back at who has previously had the honour.
William Shakespeare
The very first £20 note was produced in 1725 but production ceased on them in 1943.
The first £20 in recent times was started in 1970 which was mainly purple in colour and featured Shakespeare who is widely considered to be Britain’s greatest poet and playwright.
The note was last issued in 1991.
The Bard of Avon is thought to have been born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon.
He married Anne Hathaway when he was 18 and they had three children.
Few concrete details of his life are known but he managed to produce some of Britain’s most famous plays including Hamlet, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet and Othello.
He died on April 23, 1616 at the age of 52.
Michael Faraday
The £20 note was changed in 1991 when scientist Michael Faraday appeared.
Born in 1791 Faraday had little formal education but went on to be one of the most influential scientists in history due to his research on magnetic fields and produced the basis for what is known as Faraday’s law of induction.
Albert Einstein is said to have kept a picture of Faraday on his study wall, along with images of Isaac Newton and James Clerk Maxwell.
He turned down the offer of a knighthood on religious grounds.
Faraday had a highly illustrious career and died at his home at Hampton Court – now 37 Hampton Court Road in August 1867.
Edward Elgar
The English composer first appeared on the bank note in 1999.
Sir Edward William Elgar was born in a small town outside of Worcester in 1857 and went on to become one of Britain’s most well-known composers.
His most famous pieces include The Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches as well as two symphonies.
Elgar’s rise to fame was slow and he and his wife, Alice Roberts, worked hard to make him an established name in the world of music.
But his big break came in 1899 with his Enigma Variations when he was 42 but it established him as the prominent British composer of his age.
Adam Smith
The Scottish economist, born in 1790, first appeared on the £20 note in March 2007.
He is said to be the father of modern economics due to his Wealth of Nations, published in 1776, which laid out the foundations for classic free market economics.

He set out the concept of a division of labour and argued how competition can lead to greater prosperity.
He didn’t just work in the field of economics but also moral philosophy and wrote The Theory of Moral Sentiments in 1759.
He died in Edinburgh in July 1790.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
