POKÉMON Go players will finally be able to pit their pocket monsters against each other in a major update to the smash hit mobile game.
Niantic confirmed as much this afternoon in a series of somewhat cryptic tweets.
Player-versus-player battles have been the most-demanded feature from players since the Pokémon Go’s hugely successful launch two years ago.
Since the launch, developer Niantic has been slowly adding more and more features to the game, including a range of social features designed to connect players to each other.
Recently, gifting and a friends system was introduced, and may suggested this meant Player versus Player (PvP) battles weren’t too far away.
In Pokémon Go, players can currently only fight collections of Pokémon controlled by the game as they fight for control of in-game Gyms, which are scattered across the real world at major landmarks.
Sun Online got a sneak peak of the new PvP features earlier this week, and will be able to share more soon once a few more details have been filled in.
The success of Pokémon Go’s new social features, huge community events and in-game quest system have seen it break its first records since its launch.

In September the game passed the $2 billion (£1.57 billion) revenue mark, and player numbers reached levels over the summer not seen since the craze first kicked off.
Niantic have been busy with other projects recently too, with more details being released of their Harry Pottter mobile game, Wizards Unite, which is due out next year.
