THE Bank of England first introduced a £10 note in 1759 but stopped in 1945.
Since it was reintroduced in 1964 the first version featured a lion before going to on carry images of some very famous people. We look at who has appeared in the past.
Florence Nightingale
“The Lady with the Lamp” first appeared on the note in February 1975 and is seen nowadays as founding modern nursing.
Born in Florence, Italy in 1820 she became well-known for her care of wounded soldiers during the Crimean War.
She founded her nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital in London which was the first secular one in the world.
The Florence Nightingale Medal is the highest international award a nurse can achieve.
As well International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on her birthday, May 12.
Nightingale died peacefully in her sleep, aged 90, in August 1910 and is buried I St Margaret’s Church in East Wellow, Hampshire.
Charles Dickens
The English writer and social critic first appeared on the bank note in 1992.
Dickens, born in 1812, was a prolific writer; editing a journal for 20 years, writing 15 novels, five novellas as well as hundreds of non-fiction articles – and he also found time to lecture, do readings and campaign on social reform.
He found fame with The Pickwick Papers which was serialised in 1836 and sealed his international reputation.
Among his most acclaimed works are: Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations.
Dickens died on June 9, 1870 after suffering a second stroke. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
Charles Darwin
The first tenners to feature the naturist and biologist was in November 2000.
Darwin, born in 1809, became famous for his theory of evolution in The Origin of Species, which was published in 1859.
He first became well-known for his five-year voyage on HMS Beagle which cemented his reputation as a geologist.
In a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace he set out his theory of natural selection, which detailed the struggle for existence.
Darwin lived until he was 73 and died in Downe, Kent in April 1882.
Jane Austen
The famous 19th century author, born in Hampshire in 1775, replaced Darwin in September 2017.
Her hugely popular novels, including Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Emma continue to be avidly read today but she found little acclaim and success during her lifetime.
Her novels largely focus and critique the British landed gentry of the 18th century which are laced with irony and realism.

There is some debate over her cause of death. Many biographers state it as Addison’s disease although some have put it down to Hodgkin’s lymphoma but whatever the cause she slowly deteriorated in 1816 and early 1817.
She was taken to Winchester in May and eventually died in July, aged just 41.
