SIMON Cowell has admitted that he “thought Cheryl was dead” following her controversial X Factor performance.
The music mogul spoke out about the former judge’s performance of comeback single Love Made Me Do It during a rare interview on This Morning earlier today.
Cheryl’s appearance sparked backlash at the time, with the singer’s vocals being slammed by viewers as they mocked her “cringey” dance routine – which saw the mother-of-one lick her hand.
Speaking to Lizzie Cundy, Simon was asked what he made of the divisive production.
Simon replied: “Well I thought she was dead at the end, actually.”
The star went on to point out that he was caught on camera telling his co-judge Louis Tomlinson that he thought Cheryl had died during the live show.
He shared: “I remember her laying there and I said to Louis: ‘I think she’s dead’.
“And then she stood up, so I was laughing afterwards.”
Simon did not comment on whether he agreed with the criticism that Cheryl received during the live show.
As well as being panned by viewers, the singer’s performance generated 100 Ofcom complaints from furious viewers, who thought that it was too raunchy for Saturday night TV.

Elsewhere in Simon’s telltale interview, the star confirmed that current X Factor judges Louis, Robbie Williams, and Ayda Field will be back again next year – although he joked that it will be expensive.
When asked if they’ll return, Simon said: “It will cost a lot of money but yes, of course.
“They’ve been amazing.”
The star was being interviewed ahead of this weekend’s X Factor grand final, with the head judge admitting that Louis’ act Dalton Harris is “the one to beat” as he, Scarlett Lee, and Anthony Russell compete for the top spot of the ITV singing competition.
