THIS stunning fairytale castle with two towers and a helipad is on the market for £1.25million.
Tawstock Castle, also known as ‘The Tower’, which is located near Barnstaple, Devon boasts glorious views of the surrounding countryside.
The dining room also has a suite of couches, for residents to socialise with their friendsAnd the impressive building is surrounded not by a moat but a driveway encircled in turn by a bailey wall.
The four-bedroom property was positioned for the views in the late 18 Century.
Two of the bedrooms are quirky circular rooms in the main tower, while the other two boast en-suite facilities.
One of the best rooms in the house is the main hall, which looks more like King Arthur’s court.
Medieval spirit is captured in the mullion detail windows and the checkerwork ceiling beams, carved into “dentil mouldings”.
It was most likely a folly built by Sir Bourchier Wrey, Baronet, who lived at nearby Tawstock Manor.
The folly was clearly built by someone with imagination and flare, and the people who extended it and refurbished it into the castellated concoction it is today followed in Sir Bouchier’s footsteps.
Recently it has served as a lucrative holiday let: Rural Retreats bills it as rentable “from £1033 per week”.
The castle still appears on their calendar as fully booked until January 2021.
GLORIOUS VIEWS
The more Georgian-looking fireplace surround, now hosting a wood burner, weds Tawstock Castle’s two eras nicely.
Also handsome: the hardwood floor.
With room for a dining room table as well as a suite of couches, this is a great place to gather and socialise.
The circular kitchen must have tested the kitchen designers’ mettle to get all the angles right, but they came up trumps with a smart black and white contemporary design.
There’s also a study, if you’d like to brush up on your Ovid, your Childe Harolde, your Swift, or indeed anything else the Society of Dilettanti might have enjoyed.
Less literary but also useful is a laundry room.
Clearly four-poster beds are a must in these bedrooms: you may also consider wall tapestries or heraldic family trees. Fleur de lis stencil? Could be overkill.
The best spots are the roof terrace and the tower lookout, both protected by battlements. From here, you can really enjoy the situation and those panoramic views that so captivated The Bouche.
