"Many Photos" - Poldark fans complain the once steamy BBC drama is lacking in love scenes that set pulses racing

Poldark viewers are disappointed over the lack of romance in the final series of the once steamy BBC drama - claiming writer Debbie Horsfield has 'ruined' the show with 'too much politics'.

The early series of the show focused on the burgeoning relationship between Cornwall gentleman Ross Poldark and his scullery maid turned wife, Demelza. It set pulses racing with its love triangles, bedroom romps and upstairs-downstairs affairs.

However fans of the show have been left unsatisfied so far this season, complaining that Horsfield has introduced too many characters and has constructed a plot that puts too much focus on politics of the era.

This series is the first that Horsfield, who has worked on the show since its premiere, has not used Winston Graham's novels as inspiration.

And viewers have been left cold by her efforts to continue the much-loved story without the support of the book series.

One viewer tweeted: 'Fine writer though she is, Debbie Horsfield is not Winston Graham and cannot invest the same emotion or feeling for the characters as he did. They are coming from a different brain and can’t be quite the same.'

Another posted: 'This series of #Poldark is just boring. Writing a final series, good writer that she is, has ruined the whole thing for me. Too many sub-plots and politics. Characters not aged. Kids ages do not match. Very, very disappointing.'

A third added: 'Not enjoying this series , its watchable but feels so flat. its better when it’s not in London plus boring politics yawn.

'Now George has lost the plot we are lacking a real interesting villain. Half the new characters caught up in this boring plot look the same to me. #Poldark.'

This series sees Ross and Demelza leave Cornwall for the humdrum of London after Poldark was elected as a Member of Parliament.

They also lend their support to their friend Colonel Edward Despard, a real-life figure whose wife Catherine, better known as Kitty, was the daughter of a former slave.

But while their's is certainly a worthy cause, fans have been left underwhelmed by the procedural scenes set inside the Houses of Parliament.

'Poldark has done dullsville,' wrote a disgruntled fan.

'Not a fan or season 5 so far. What happened to the romance,' asked one.

'I'm sorry, but the two episodes bored me,' complained another. 'Geez... even Poldark is not really great this season... grrrr,' wrote one.

Another said: 'I still remember the good old days when Poldark was enjoyable. At least we still have the beautiful opening credits.'

'Too many people, too much politics. I'm sorry but I don't care about any of them. Where are those wonderful (love) scenes between Ross and Demelza,' asked a viewer.

'This series is so slow and boring. It must be bad for me to want to see George get more screen time. 1-4 seasons fantastic, this one, a wet firework,' said another.

And some regretted that Ross' formidable foe George Warleggan (Jack Farthing) displayed a weak game this season.

Some's lack of interest in the plot saw them wish the show would not have dispersed itself with new characters but focused on old ones such as George Warleggan (Jack Farthing)

Still hot from the burn inflicted by the disappointing finale of HBO sensation Game of Thrones, some fans hope that Poldark will experience a different fate.

'I think we (some fans) May agree after GOT finale we don't want to be disappointed. The season was rushed and didn't do the series justice. So at least I'm hoping for a better serious finale and I'm enthusiastic about it,' explained a viewer.

And in the midst of the disappointing season five debut, fans of Winston Grahams also voiced their discontent with the BBC adaptation.

'What have the BBC done to this wonderful piece of literature, Winston is not around to witness thankfully, he would be distraught. Thankfully you have cancelled this before you can destroy it further, Shame on you,' wrote one viewer.

During his run, Poldark made a name for itself by bringing lively twists and beautiful scenery to the small screen.

In 18th century Cornwall, Ross Poldark makes his return to his land and family after almost losing his life in War of Independence.  Throughout four seasons, the viewers followed the characters as Ross tried to revive the mining industry of Cornwall.

Season four closed on the shocking death of Elizabeth, George's wife and Ross's first love, and forever shut down the love triangle between these three characters.

In season five, George, once a formidably evil counterpart to Ross's moral code, is now dealing with the loss of his wife and driven into madness by her ghost.

Meanwhile, Ross and Demelza are set to return to Cornwall in this Sunday's episode.
