"Many Photos" - Hull Grandmother Tammy Goodfellow downed ten pints and led attack on man with mental health problems

A grandmother downed ten pints of beer before leading her husband and son on an unprovoked joint attack on a man with mental health difficulties.

The victim was left unconscious in the street and covered in his own urine having 'wet himself', Hull Crown Court heard.

He had been out looking for a missing dog when he came across Tammy Goodfellow and her family on Shannon Road, east Hull, in the early hours of June 17 last year.

Goodfellow, 41, mistakenly believed the man had been part of a group who had been in an altercation with her 17-year-old son, Joe George.

As the barefoot Goodfellow was being dragged away, and the victim was being tended to by his pregnant partner, Goodfellow broke free and returned to kick him three times to the body.

George, who was awaiting sentence for assault and having an offensive weapon, also joined in the initial assault, but was also knocked unconscious when he stumbled and banged his head against a bollard.

CCTV played to the court by prosecutor Martin Robertshaw showed the victim in a struggle with Goodfellow, her husband Michael Goodfellow, 39, and George, before she turned and began punching the man in the face, with George also trying to hit him.

After initially appearing to break the melee up, Michael Goodfellow placed his forearm around the victim's neck from behind and strangled him into unconsciousness, maintaining his hold as they lay on the floor.

Mr Robertshaw said: 'By that grip he's effectively choking the complainant, who was finding it difficult to breathe, and he fell to the ground. When he fell to the ground he was clearly unconscious. Such was his condition he lost control of his bladder and wet himself.'

Tammy Goodfellow then knelt over the defenceless victim and repeatedly punched him in the head.

Michael Goodfellow released his grip as the victim's pregnant partner arrived on the scene.

'She believed that the complainant was in fact dead because of his state, lying on the ground unconscious,' Mr Robertshaw said.

Police were called and the victim was taken to hospital and placed on a ventilator in intensive care, where he remained until the following day. He was in hospital for 'three to four' days', the court heard.

In a victim statement, the man, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, said he now 'lives in fear' and has suicidal thoughts.

He said: 'This assault has deeply affected me every days since it happened in every part of my life.

'I'm not the same person I once was, and can't understand how or why this has happened. I would like to see the people responsible punished; not only for what they did, for how they have made me feel.'

In police interview, Tammy Goodfellow became 'emotional and upset', and said she was 'ashamed of herself and her behaviour'. She 'didn't want to look at the CCTV evidence', Mr Robertshaw said. She said she had drunk ten pints of beer before the incident and was 'drunk'.

Michael Goodfellow said the incident and 'clearly got out of hand, and he thought at the time his wife was being attacked. George made no comment in either of his two interviews, including when shown the footage'.

The Goodfellows and George, all of the same address in Douglas Road, east Hull, all admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).

Tammy Goodfellow had eight previous offences on her record, including two of ABH and a common assault. Her husband had one conviction for drink-driving.

Stephen Robinson, for Tammy Goodfellow, said she had managed to stay out of trouble for 'a considerable period of time' and it was 'a great pity she's back before the courts for another offence of violence'.

He said: 'Her life has not been an easy one. There have been a number of issues and tragedies, many not of her making.' Mr Robinson said she was 'extremely remorseful' and described the attack as 'a sudden and severe loss of temper'.

Rachel Scott, for Michael Goodfellow, said the case was the delivery driver's first experience of a Crown court, which he found 'quite daunting'. She said he 'doesn't recognise' his behaviour in the CCTV and had demonstrated 'genuine remorse'.

Miss Scott also represented George, and said his father took his own life when he was nine weeks old and he had also witnessed domestic violence. He was now living with a friend and his mother and also working as a delivery driver.

Judge Mark Bury adjourned sentencing until Tuesday. Tammy Goodfellow was remanded in custody, while her husband and son were released on bail.
