"Many Photos" - Homeless man 24 accused of sexual assault on boy 8 in Burgess Park Camberwell south London

A homeless man has been accused of kidnapping an eight-year-old boy from a park and sexually assaulting him. 

Shane Upton, 24, is alleged to have snatched the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, from Burgess Park in Camberwell, south London on June 17.

The youngster, 8, was reported missing from the area at 5.20pm that day and Upton was arrested an hour later.   

Upton, of no fixed address, appeared at Inner London Crown Court to face charges of sexual assault and kidnapping, as well as two assaults on police officers involved in his arrest. 

Wearing a grey prison issue tracksuit, Upton spoke only to confirmed his date of birth and nationality.

Prosecutor Adrian Amer said: 'The defendant is facing a number of counts on the indictment.

'Count one being committing an offence, in essence, kidnapping, with the intent to commit a sexual offence.

'The prosecution alleges he touched an eight-year-old boy. There are some subsidiary offences, there are two assaults on the police officers who attended the scene to rescue the boy.'

Judge Usha Karu adjourned the plea hearing and remanded Upton in custody at HMP High Down.

He will now return to Inner London Crown Court to plead on 16 September.

If he pleads not guilty, he will then face a trial on 9 December.

Upton faces one count of sexual assault on a child under 13. He is also charged with one count of committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence and two counts of assault of an emergency worker.
