"Many Photos" - Brits would be sent home from work when temperatures hit 30C under new laws proposed by Labour

WORKERS would be sent home if the temperature tops 30C (86F) under new proposals by Labour.

Leader Jeremy Corbyn has vowed to put an end to sweaty workplaces.

Employers will have to introduce air conditioning, extra breaks and let staff turn up in shorts and T shirts under the plan.

And workers doing physically tough jobs will get to down tools over 27C (80C).

Shadow business minister Laura Pidcock said: “As we’re all being reminded this week, working in hot conditions is really uncomfortable, often stressful and it makes us less productive and even ill.

“Plus it’s often the lowest paid and most insecure workers who suffer the most.”

Labour said global warming means sweltering heatwaves are here to stay.

‘CHASING HEADLINES’

But their proposals risk fuelling the problem by forcing employers to install energy-guzzling air conditioning units – which is adding to climate change.

The free-market think-tank, the Institute of Economic Affairs, said Labour is just chasing headlines and that employers already have to provide a ‘reasonable’ temperature.

The IEA’s Andy Mayer said: “Labour’s proposal, while eye-catching, would make no one better off, but instead reduce the flexibility of employers to manage those risks.

“What is appropriate for the socialist book store in Islington is not appropriate for a foundry in Sheffield or kiln in Stoke.

“Micro-legislating in this way will simply add to their costs and risk unemployment.”

Britain has been baking in a heatwave this week, with temperatures set to soar to 39C  today.
