"Many Photos" - Army bosses have handed recruits thousands of pounds in ‘golden hello’ payments

ARMY recruiters have paid thousands of pounds in “golden hellos” in a desperate bid to boost frontline troop numbers.

They handed out bonuses of £2,500 each to 354 candidates so they would enlist earlier than planned.

The incentives, totalling £885,000, enticed recruits to take up training places this year.

But the Army, which is paying £1.3billion over ten years to outsourcing giant Capita to manage recruitment, is still thousands of personnel understrength.

Tory ex-Armed Forces Minister Mark Francois said: “Capita are now so desperate to avoid the shame of always missing their targets, they are now offering golden hellos to persuade recruits, who would enlist anyway, to join slightly earlier.

“The solution is to stop bribing recruits with taxpayers’ money and fire the incompetents from Capita instead.”

The Army was supposed to have 82,000 full-time personnel and 30,100 reserves by March 2019 but the target was missed by a total of more than 5,000.

Candidates were found to be dropping out because the recruitment process took up to a year.

The MoD said the incentives were for high priority vacancies.

It added: “This allows us to get the right people in the right jobs as soon as possible.

“This ensures we continue to fulfil our operational commitments to keep Britain safe.”
