RYANAIR passengers were left stranded at an airport in Romania after they refused an “18 hour” bus ride to Greece.
Their original flight was due to travel from London Stansted to Thessaloniki in Greece on Friday evening when bad weather conditions caused it to be diverted.
Instead of landing in Greece that same evening on a flight that should have taken three hours, passengers were diverted to Timisoara in Romania – 460 miles away from their final destination.
After landing, the 201 people on board were reportedly told they could be taken to their destination in Greece by bus, which would take “18 hours” according to one passenger.
Furious travellers took to Twitter to vent their frustration with the airline.
Passenger Christina wrote on Twitter: “@Ryanair is only offering one ‘solution’ to the passengers of FR8582 and that is to get on an old bus for 18 hours with the same driver.
“It is illegal and dangerous for one bus driver to drive for so many hours. There is also thick snow everywhere. #boycottryanair.”
Eighty-nine passengers refused to travel by bus and stayed at the airport overnight with no food or water in freezing conditions, according to Greek media.
Aegean Airlines, a Greek airline carrier, was sent to Romania by the Greek government after passengers contacted local media in desperation.
They were then taken to their correct destination and arrived on Saturday at 5pm, a day later than planned.
The airline told local media that they were sorry for the situation which was “beyond our control”.
Passengers are unlikely to be able to claim compensation for the incident due to the cause being poor weather, which is not covered under EU law.

Ryanair were recently voted the worst airline in the UK for the sixth year running, according to Which? Travel.
Due to high-profile incidents, including cancelled flights following strikes and passengers not being given compensation, the airline received just 40 per cent overall customer satisfaction.
Of the 7,901 members, 70 per cent said they would never fly with the Irish airline even if they were the cheapest on the market.
