GPs should encourage pensioners to have more sex for the sake of their health, researchers say.

But too few doctors tackle the issue even though getting jiggy more often makes people happier and healthier and will save the NHS cash, the researchers claim.
Dr Lee Smith, from Anglia Ruskin University, said: “Health professionals should acknowledge that older adults are not asexual and that a frequent and problem-free sex life in this population is related to better wellbeing.
“However, encouragement to try new positions and explore different types of sexual activities is not regularly given.” The call follows research into the sex lives of nearly 7,000 people with an average age of 65.
Those who got frisky in the past year scored higher in an enjoyment of life survey.

Men who had the most sex reported the highest life satisfaction but women preferred more kissing, petting and fondling.
Researcher Dr Sarah Jackson, of University College London, said: “If encouraging people to enjoy a healthy sex life in old age could help to boost well-being, there may be benefits for the individual and for the sustainability of health services.”
