New photo Tokyo attack: Man drives car into New Year's Eve crowds with 'intention to kill'

A van has slammed into a crowd of people as they celebrated New Year's Eve on the streets of downtown Tokyo.

A man aged in his 20s has been taken into custody by police and eight people are so believed to have been injured in the attack.

Police say the man is suspected of intentionally trying to kill people by ploughing the medium-sized van into crowds who had lined the streets to welcome in 2019.

Local TV footage showed the small van with a smashed-up front end, as ambulance workers and police officers rushed to the scene.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Tuesday on Takeshita Street, well known to tourists and pop culture fans.

Popular with teenagers, it runs right by Meiji Shrine in Harajuku.
