BIG Ben refers to the Great Bell which is part of the clock in the Palace of Westminster but is commonly used to refer to the Elizabeth Tower at the north end of the building.
It was completed in 1859 and is now undergoing £61million renovations which are expected to be completed in 2021 which include both the tower and the bell.
Does Big Ben tell the time during its renovation?
In a word, yes but the world famous bell has been pretty much silent since August 2017 due to the renovation work.
The bell’s hourly chimes have been paused but occasionally they do still ring out to mark special occasions.
The Great Bell, popularly called Big Ben, weighs 13.7 tonnes and would normally strike every hour, to the note of E natural.
It is accompanied by four quarter bells, which weigh between one and four tonnes each and chime every 15 minutes.
The chimes last fell silent in 2007 for maintenance work.
Hammers are locked and the bell has been disconnected to the clock mechanism but the clock continues to function, just silently.
Will it ring for New Year?
Every year though as the New Year arrives it does chime out.
The first bong will ring out at exactly midnight, marking the start of 2019 in the UK.
For the past two years, it has also chimed to mark 11am on Armistice Day.
When will the repairs be finished?
The famous London landmark was silenced in August 2017 to undergo a four-year renovation programme.
It is due to be back up and running in 2021.

A bespoke electric mechanism has been built to power the 200kg striking hammer.
The renovations involved the Great Bell, the Great Clock and the Elizabeth Tower.
Scientists recently discovered the hands and the numerals of the clock were originally a deep Prussian blue until the 1930s.
Pollution and weathering are said to have turned them black.
