THREE decades ago, EastEnders was the first UK soap to show two men kissing – and now it will be the first one to regularly feature a gay bar.
This year will herald a new opening in Albert Square in a move towards diversity, thanks to the BBC1 soap’s edgy new boss Kate Oates who joined after revamping ITV’s Coronation Street.
The venue will be welcomed by characters such as Tina Carter, played by Luisa Bradshaw-White[/caption]
The gay-friendly venue will be welcomed by characters such as Tina Carter, played by Luisa Bradshaw-White, and will be presented as a hip alternative to typical boozer the Queen Vic.
Discussing her plans to update the soap, Kate said: “I’m really interested in bringing some more LGBTQ characters in.
“We’re looking at opening a gay bar on the Square which will be a super-cool precinct where gay and straight characters can all just hang out.
“It should be something really exciting, really fun, really visual and feel really true to multi-cultural London.”

Kate takes over the @BBCEastEnders Twitter account today at noon to reveal more about the direction she plans to take the soap in.
A TV source said: “The gay bar will be a great new filming venue for the show and provide dozens of interesting plot lines.
“Producers plan to use it as a new space and backdrop to film scenes and base drama.
Kate is keen that the bar won’t just be for gay and bisexual characters, but for everyone.

It will offer a different feel to the traditional pub vibe of the Queen Vic.
“It’s an important move for the show to authentically reflect modern London life.”
No doubt the new bar will be serving London Pride, and 2019 will see a Walford Pride march.

Spy role still top secret
RICHARD MADDEN has hinted that his character in Bodyguard, police protection officer David Budd, could be forced into a different line of work when the BBC’s drama makes its highly anticipated return.
Quizzed on a potential storyline, he said: “There hasn’t been an official announcement yet.
“You have to take into consideration how well known the character would be because he’s been on television with the bomb vest strapped to him.
“So I wonder how that’s going to affect his future career path.”
Since Bodyguard, Richard has been in the frame, alongside the likes of Idris Elba and Tom Hardy, to take over from Daniel Craig as James Bond, but he dismissed the reports as “speculation”.
That’s what they all say – he’s definitely secretly gunning for it.

He calls in the salon and begs Audrey to meet him for dinner in the bistro, promising that all will become clear.
Audrey confides to Maria she really loves Lewis – and with Maria’s blessing, Audrey heads into town to buy a new dress for her dinner date.
But as I revealed in October, Lewis’s days in Weatherfield are very much numbered. And today could be the day he meets his gory fate.
In Emmerdale, furious Cain seeks vengeance after Matty is attacked by his transphobic ex Isaac. But just as he’s about to let his fists do the talking, he receives a vicious pummelling himself.
