New photo Mum-of-four Peta Todd discusses making her own Christmas traditions with her kids

TRADITION is a funny thing. It can be something that warms your cockles or gives you a knot in your stomach.

This time of year has “traditions” by the sleigh-load.

Christmas can be an overwhelming time of year when there is pressure to keep the family happy[/caption]

And even the biggest Grinch – yes, you included, Mark Cavendish – is partial to a few.

Whether it be the must-have Cadbury selection pack without which my husband sulks, or my grandmother’s Christmas cake with icing so hard and sharp it will tear your mouth to shreds, some stuff is just a given.

With every year that passes, the more apparent it becomes to me I can create my own traditions. I can do away with any that make me anything other than happy.

I have an opportunity to write new scripts for my own children and scrap any scenes that remind me of sadder times.

Old family traditions are great, but making new ones that are right for your family will make the festive season even more special[/caption]

As humans, it’s so easy to get stuck in a rut of habit and do the same old things year in, year out . . . while feeling rubbish about it.

So if you hate Brussels sprouts but eat them because it’s “tradition”, why not leave them off the list this year?

Replace them with something you want second helpings of.

If you have memories of tensions or arguments on Christmas Day, refuse to pass these down to your own children.

Take a deep breath and pick your battles . . . other than the annual tradition of arguing over Monopoly. That is a must. Now I am married, I have to accommodate my other half’s ideas around how things plan out – such as the times his family eat their dinner and open their presents.

I don’t know what you do if you are in a relationship with a “wait until after lunch to open presents” kind of a person. I mean, come on, it’s after BREAKFAST, no?

Every little detail I add or festive touch I create will shape my children’s understanding of tradition.

I know Mark hates how excited I get, but I don’t care.

New habits will make Christmas a special and memorable time for all the family[/caption]

I don’t want to pass on any negative stuff we had to our children. I want our house positively powered by merriment.

In our house, we have a Christmas Eve box with new PJs for everyone, a game and some snacks. Then we sprinkle “reindeer food” outside.

What traditions do you have? Have you made new ones?

Life is short and can change in a moment, so I will for ever make sure these special days are celebrated.

I know that is easier said than done, but tomorrow isn’t promised.

So wear the antlers, do the dance . . . and if it doesn’t bring you cheer, scrap it.

To achieve her kick-ass figure, Hayden – who plays cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes – follows the ‘quartering’ rule. She eats only a quarter of the food on her plate, then waits 20 minutes before deciding whether she needs to eat again.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”

SATC star Kim swears by gym sessions with Russian kettle bells (traditional cast-iron weights) and the South Beach Diet to give her the body she wants. To avoid overeating, Kim has a radical diet trick – squirting lemon juice on her leftovers – so she won’t carry on picking.

Kim says: “I am no super-thin Hollywood actress. I am built for men who like women to look like women.”
