Accused wife killer Chris Dawson has walked free from jail, allowing him to spend Christmas with his family.

Dawson, 70, was granted bail last Monday after being charged with murdering his wife Lyn, who disappeared from Sydney's northern beaches in 1982.

However, Dawson's release from the Silverwater Correctional Facility was delayed through the week and over the weekend due to the complexity of his application.

Paperwork which had held up his release has now been accepted, paving the way for his release on Christmas Eve.

Dawson's family, including his brother Peter, offered up $1.5million in surety comprised of real estate and other assets to secure his release. 

He intends pleading not guilty to killing his wife who was 33 when she disappeared from Sydney's northern beaches. Her body has never been found. 

Dawson is expected to spend Christmas with family in Queensland following his release, according to news.com.au.
