Police have launched a murder investigation after a man in his twenties was stabbed to death in east London.  

Police were called to Kingsland Road, junction with Waterson Street in the trendy Hoxton area of Shoreditch at 6.30am following reports of a man injured.

Officers, London Air Ambulance and London Ambulance Service attended and found the man suffering with multiple stab injuries.

He was taken to a central London hospital in a critical condition where he died in a few hours later.

The killing has led to several road closures with Shoreditch High Street closed in both directions.

 His next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

The Homicide and Major Crime Command will be investigating along with police in Hackney.

The man has yet to be identified and police are still looking into the circumstances of the murder.  

A crime scene remains in place. As part of this scene, temporary road closures are also in effect and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

No arrests have been made. 

The man's death is believed to be the 123rd murder in London this year. 

As well as Shoreditch High Street being closed in both directions, Old Street and Hackney Road are also shut. 

The Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville, tweeted: 'Awful news to hear, the Council is working w/ @MPSHackney & @metpoliceuk to support the investigation. Would urge anyone who was in the area early this morning to come forward. 

'At a very early stage, so don't have any further info, but thoughts with the the victim & their family.'

There has been renewed focus on the number of homicides in the capital this year, amid rising levels of violent crime in the UK.

With the lowest number of Metropolitan Police officers since 2001, there has also been a worsening of the violence on the capital's streets.

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Martin Hewitt, who has dealt with violent crime for around a decade, said in June that weapons such as zombie knives, hunting knives and machetes were being used more often.

The latest toll means it will be the fourth year in a row that at least 100 homicides have been recorded in London.

Senior figures have blamed the drugs trade as one factor fuelling the violence, with Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick, London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Justice Secretary David Gauke hitting out at middle-class cocaine users.

Between April and early September the Met's Violent Crime Taskforce also seized 1,500 knives, more than 180 guns, 600 other weapons and made 4,000 violent crime arrests.
