BRITS have woken up to a wet and foggy start – and it’s only going to get worse as Hurricane Leslie batters the UK with wind and rain next week.
A grey and misty morning will give way to balmy temperatures of up to 20C in the South today and tomorrow but rain is expected across the country this weekend.
Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said the cloud would “come and go” throughout day today, with rain in North Scotland sinking down to Central Scotland while the rest of the UK will experience drier conditions.
But the weather is set to take a turn tonight, with showers across Scotland expected tomorrow morning.
Cloudy rain has also been forecast across Wales and Northern England, while Ladbrokes are now offering 5/1 odds on SNOW falling anywhere in the UK.
Alex Apati from the bookmakers said: “We’re not completely ruling out snow as early as this weekend with extreme temperatures set to settle across the UK.”
The Met’s Mr McGivern said “no two days will be the same” over early October as mixed weather patterns become the norm.
He said: “This week our weather will be influenced by Arctic air colliding with tropical air across the Atlantic.
“The further north you are the windier it will be, the further south you are the warmer it will be but no two days will be the same.
“The weather will be highly mixed from place to place and day to day, we’re all likely to have some unsettled weather at times.”
An extending jet stream from the other side of Atlantic is set to bring “brighter, heavier rainfall” as we head into the weekend, with England and Wales becoming the most unsettled parts of the UK.
Hurricane Leslie is set to throw low pressure systems, wind and rain at UK from its position in the Atlantic from the middle of next week.
It could hit Britain the following weekend as it takes an eastwards trajectory across the ocean.
Met Office forecaster Richard Miles told The Sun Online earlier: “It will take an eastwards trajectory across the Atlantic in the middle of next week and will turn towards Europe.”

The National Hurricane Center, based in Miami, Florida, said the winds caused by the storm could cause “life-threatening” surf and rip currents.
Met Office chief forecaster Andy Page said it was not yet known what impact Hurricane Leslie could have.
He said: “‘It is too early to tell the exact impact on the UK but it will most likely bring a spell of strong winds and rain – the type of weather associated with low-pressure systems at this time of year.”
