TAKING vitamin D pills does not  strengthen your bones and muscles, scientists say.

They found even large doses did not prevent breaks or falls.

Docs carried out the biggest analysis yet of “sunlight” vitamin D’s effects using data from  81 studies.

The supplement helps regulate calcium and phosphate, needed for healthy bones, teeth and muscles.

Health chiefs recommend under-fives, pregnant and breastfeeding women and less active elderly take pills. But the researchers believe guidelines should now be changed.

Dr Mark Bolland, of the University of Auckland, New Zealand,  said: “Vitamin D does not prevent fractures, falls or improve bone mineral density.”

Brit officials also advise all adults should take the vitamin from October to March when they cannot get it from sunlight.

Last night Public Health England  said that advice stood, adding: “Those not consuming foods containing or fortified with vitamin D should consider a 10mg supplement.”
