New photo Storm Leslie WILL head towards Britain with 65mph winds – and it’s set to turn into HURRICANE today

A TROPICAL storm is set to be declared a hurricane and then hit Britain bringing with it fierce gales and torrential rain.

Cyclone Leslie has been gathering strength after being spotted 500 miles east Bermuda but could perform a dramatic U-turn and head towards Britain.

The US National Hurricane Center today said the storm has a max sustained speed of 65mph while it heads towards the east coast of America.

Met Office forecaster Richard Miles told The Sun Online: “Storm Leslie is heading towards the east coast of the US at the moment but it will turn eastwards.

“It will take an eastwards trajectory across the Atlantic in the middle of next week and will turn towards Europe.

“We don’t know where it will end up, though – it’s too soon to say. It will definitely follow an eastwards path towards Britain but it’s too early to say where it will hit.”

The National Hurricane Center, based in Miami, Florida, said the winds caused by the storm could cause “life-threatening” surf and rip currents.

A spokesman said: “Large swells generated by Leslie will continue to affect portions of the southeastern coast of the United States, Bermuda, and the Bahamas.

“These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.

“Although the swells are forecast to abate temporarily in the Bahamas later today, they are expected to increase again on Wednesday and Thursday, and propagate farther southward into the Greater and Lesser Antilles.”

The spokesman added that the storm will move “northeastward” and will “meander” over the central Atlantic for the rest of this week.
