GARETH SOUTHGATE joked about sending his No 2 Steve Holland undercover to watch Jadon Sancho.
“Steve has been out to Dortmund with a flat cap and glasses on,” said the England boss. “We managed to slip under the radar with that one.”
But there is nothing hidden about the youthful direction Southgate and Holland are going, starting with picking England’s first player born this century.
Southgate was clearly unaware when that was pointed out to him saying “blimey!”
But the England manager was sending a clear message with his squad selection for the Uefa Nations League double-header starting next week.
He may be facing Croatia and Spain with the prospect of relegation to “League B” but he is sticking with his young Lions following injuries in midfield.
Sancho, 18, and Mason Mount, 19, were joined by Nathaniel Chalobah, 23, Harry Winks, 22, and James Maddison, 21.
With Dele Alli and Fabian Delph injured, Ruben Loftus-Cheek staying at Chelsea to work on his fitness and Adam Lallana not match-fit, Southgate could have opted for Premier League regulars.
Jonjo Shelvey and Jack Cork may be among the older guard feeling sore at being overlooked.
But Southgate went for youngsters he feels can serve him over his new four-year contract which was announced yesterday.

In the case of Sancho and Mount, they are reaping the rewards of leaving the Premier League to find regular football.
Sancho snubbed offers from Manchester City for regular football and is now playing Champions League football with Borussia Dortmund.
Chelsea midfielder Mount went on loan to Vitesse Arnhem last season and has caught the eye with Derby in the Championship this term.
And the Three Lions chief said: “The decision to move tells you something about Jadon’s character and you can see that in the way he plays — he has tremendous belief in himself.
“To adapt to a new country, a new language, culture and a different style of football is a brilliant experience for a young man.
“My ex-Middlesbrough team-mate, Robert Huth, came over from Germany at a very young age to Chelsea and he was a man at 20 or 21. He was mature from all those life experiences he had been through.
“Mason, lived abroad in Holland last season and had to adapt to men’s football and a different league. All of things bring a more rounded player.”
Southgate has been impressed by the start Maddison has made at Leicester following his £24million move from Norwich, while Winks and Chalobah are back from injury.
Southgate added: “It obviously gives a message that going and playing is really important. Coaching programmes can give you a certain amount but then there is the experience of matches and high-level matches.
“You saw Harry Winks against Barcelona in a match that was a level above again and what a brilliant way to learn.
“They have to be in those types of games to progress. The evidence is there on what we need to do. And the best way for the players to progress is to play.”
That meant no place for Manchester City’s Phil Foden, despite the midfield injuries, but Chelsea’s Ross Barkley got the nod.

Southgate said: “Ross is a player we know, has good technical quality and is grasping the tactical side of the game. So it’s a good opportunity for him to come in.
“With Phil he’s physically a bit further back than the other guys. He has not played as much men’s football and it is not so easy for him to get games at the club he is at.
“For the moment I think Mason has got a bit more experience and there is more evidence to see how it translates to our training environment, playing against men.”
West Ham’s Declan Rice, 19, could be another youngster to step up if he snubs the Republic of Ireland. He is unlikely to be called up until next year because of the paperwork.
Southgate added: “There have been discussions but it hasn’t been taken any further. It was important we gave Declan time to make his decisions.”
