New photo Clint Eastwood’s big comeback at 88: Veteran star returns to acting in new trailer for The Mule

It's been six-years since Clint Eastwood last appeared on screen.

And now fans are getting their first look at the 88-year-old actor's latest project The Mule, courtesy of a new trailer out Thursday.

The veteran actor/director commands attention on-screen while playing unlikely drug smuggler Earl Stone in the based-on-a-true-story tale.

The story is inspired by the real life of Leo Sharp, who was arrested for trafficking drugs in 2011 at the age of 87.

The Mule's trailer begins with Earl surveying the trunk of his car, only to open a green duffel bag filled with bricks of white powder.

'Holy,' he mutters as a police officer approaches from behind.

While he tries to charm the policeman, he can't fool the drug-sniffing dog who barks loudly as it heads towards Earl's car.

The scene pivots to Clint's character cruising along the highway.

'Family is the most important thing,' Earl explained via voiceover, 'Don't do what I did. I put work in front of family.'

Then he appears in a shady warehouse, where he's handed the ominous green duffel.

Reflecting on his failures, Clint's character visits his home, which is marked with a bright yellow foreclosure notice.

The trailer wraps with the tagline: 'No one runs forever.'

In addition to Eastwood and Cooper, The Mule features the talents of Laurence Fishburne, and Dianne Wiest.

Clint's own daughter Alison has taken the role of Earl's daughter Iris.

American Horror Story: Murder House's Taissa Farmiga, Narcos' Michael Peña and Ignacio Serricchio of Bones also appear.

The Mule is set for theaters December 14. 

Who is Leo Sharp? The life of the world's oldest drug mule who smuggled MILLIONS of dollars worth of cocaine into the US

As a decorated World War II veteran and beloved great-grandfather, Leonard Sharp was perhaps the least likely drug dealer to ever cross the US-Mexico border. 

His age aside, Sharp still wasn't a typical criminal; he fought the Nazis in Italy during World War II and was awarded a Bronze Star for his services. The Michigan City, Indiana, man was also known for growing prize-winning daylilies and even contributed 5,000 plant bulbs to his community.

So the world was stunned when it was revealed in 2012 that the former horticulturist had trafficked thousands of pounds of cocaine during a decade-long career as a drug runner for the Mexican Sinaloa cartel.

Leo, who was known as Tata - or 'grandfather' - was first arrested in 2011 at the age of 89, when Michigan state police pulled him over and discovered 200lbs of cocaine in his vehicle.  

It was later revealed in court in that Leo, who passionately tended his garden during his spare time, had smuggled more than a ton of drugs, worth $3 million, into the US, with reports suggesting that he was paid $1 million in 2010 alone.

According to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit, Sharp had been running cocaine and other drugs as early as 2009, when he was just 86.

He also hauled duffel bags stuffed with cash back to the southwest border of the US for the criminal organization that was part of the Sinaloa cartel, prosecutors said.

Sharp later plead guilty to federal drug charges, and was sentenced to three years in jail; he was sent to prison on May 7, 2014, his 90th birthday, and told the judge at the time that he was 'heartbroken he did what he did'.
