A St Louis animal rescue shelter on Monday received a heart-wrenching letter from a woman saying she was losing her battle with cancer and pleading to find a new home for her beloved dog, Shell.
The next day, police were dispatched to a burning apartment in the St Louis suburb of Affton where they found the body of Shell's owner, 46-year-old Crystal Chrisp.
They said the woman had shot herself and her death has been ruled a suicide. The cause of the fire that broke out inside her unit in the 8900 block of Kidder Avenue at around 1pm Tuesday remains under investigation.

Final act of kindness: Cancer patient Crystal Chrisp (left), 46, took her life in suburban St Louis on Tuesday, but not before making sure her beloved pooch, Shell (left and right), had a new home

Desperate plea: On Monday, Chrisp dropped off Shell at Stray Rescue of St Louis, along with this tragic note

Police and firefighters found Chrisp dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside her burning apartment in Affton on Tuesday afternoon
Neighboring apartments were evacuated by firefighters, but no one else was injured, reported St Louis Post-Dispatch.
Shell was not in the apartment at the time of her owner's suicide because Chrisp had dropped her off at Stray Rescue of St. Louis the previous day, along with her handwritten note.
The letter, dated September 19, read: 'I [am] writing you cause I need you to take my dog, Shell. My mother adopted Shell from Stray Rescue around 2009-2010.... In 2012, she had a massive stroke [and] now has Alzheimer's. So in 2012 Shell came to live with me. I've been fighting cancer for a few months and If you're reading this I lost my battle. I need for my baby girl to be taking [sic] care of in a home with one person.
'She is a very sweet girl. She's been [through] a lot so she has trouble with trust in the beginning. She loves to cuddle but don't like to be carried. She's very smart...In these days all I do is worry about what's going to happen to her. I love this girl, she is my daughter.'

Chrisp wrote in her final note that her 'baby girl' Shell had been in her family since 2009 or 2010, and that the pup had been through a lot

The shelter has already found a new home for Chrisp's beloved pet (left and right)
As of Thursday afternoon, the letter posted on the shelter's Facebook page has been shared more than 1,780 times.
Many people have asked to take Shell in, and on Wednesday the shelter said that the little pointy-eared pooch was on her way to a new home, but would not go into detail.
Shell's owner, Chrisp, worked as a Metro bus driver for 18 years. Her close friend and colleague Sharon Hyster-Harris told KMOV4 that she had beaten breast cancer several years ago, but the disease made a comeback earlier this year.
'I think she just decided she couldn't deal with it anymore,' said Hyster-Harris.
Chrisp had no children of her own and treated animals as her kids, according to those who knew her.
