"Many Photos" - Almost five million Britons are living below the poverty line

Almost five million Britons are living deep below the poverty line, a controversial study claims.

The poverty line is defined by earnings at 60 per cent or less of the nation’s median income. Last year median household income was £28,400.

Now the Social Metrics Commission claims that more than 4.5 million have been over 50 per cent below the line since 2000.

It says overall there are about 14.3 million in poverty, including 8.3 million working-age adults, 4.6 million children and 1.3 million pensioners.

SMC chairman Philippa Stroud said: ‘These findings highlight the urgent need for a more united and concerted approach [from the Government].’ 

A Whitehall spokesman said: ‘Work offers the best route out of poverty and we have record numbers in employment.’
