GOODWOOD

IT should pay to be a Sinner in the Unibet Handicap. SINJAARI was touched off in the London Gold Cup at Newbury in May. That contest is usually red-hot and has thrown up a stack of Group winners over the years.

This season’s race looks up to standard with the short-head winner, Headman, going on to land a French Group 2 on his next start.

It was no surprise to see William Haggas’ hope go off second favourite for the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot but James Doyle’s plan to stay wide in the early stages from a wide draw backfired as he could not get a decent position. That run is best forgiven.

Fox Premier had a low draw in stall two in that Royal Ascot contest but nothing went right as he found all sorts of trouble when buried in the pack.

He’s much better judged on his impressive Sandown win in May when he thrashed subsequent dual winner Sameem. The handicapper whacked him up 11lbs for that effort but it turns out he was right.

Forest Of Dean was four lengths behind my fancy in the London Gold Cup having earlier bolted up at Doncaster. He’s not been out since and the suspicion is that he’ll come into his own when upped to 1m4f.

Walkinthesand seems to have found his trip. He was well on top at the finish when returned to 1m2f for a decent Newmarket handicap. His previous efforts in Listed races suggest he’s going to be better than a handicapper so he carries top weight for good reason.

Korcho was runner-up in that race. His performance underlines the strength of the form but he might struggle to turn the tables on Walkinthesand.

THREAT should have the bookies’ warning lights flashing in the Qatar Richmond Stakes. He showed his class on just his second start when going down by just half a length to favourite Arizona in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

That’s always a hot juvenile contest and has thrown up no end of top-class horses down the years.

This season’s contest looked up to standard so it was a cracking effort to finish so close after receiving a hefty whack at the start on just his second race having landed a Newmarket maiden on his debut.

Richard Hannon and his dad have won this Group 2 prize no less than six times in the last 11 years and I expect their farming of this contest to continue.

Guildsman was only a neck behind Threat at Royal Ascot. That came just 11 days after his impressive debut win over today’s course and distance on soft ground.

His fourth place in the July Stakes at Newmarket was a little disappointing and it might have been down to the quick ground. He could do without it drying out.

Golden Horde was fifth in the Coventry and he might have been a bit closer if Adam Kirby hadn’t had trouble with his reins. He might end up over a bit further.

DO a deal with Dal boy in the Gordon Stakes. DAL HORRISGLE looked the brightest or prospects when sauntering clear to complete a hat-trick of wins at Haydock four weeks ago.

The way he cruised through from the rear over the 1m2f trip was incredibly impressive and it was a switch of tactics from his all-the-way Nottingham win on his return to action in June.

It all points to a straightforward horse and that counts for a fair bit around Goodwood’s twists and turns. There’s also good reasons to think William Haggas’ hope will be even better now he tackles 1m4f.

As a half-brother to 2m winner Dal Harraild his pedigree is packed with stamina and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him line up for the St Leger with a live chance later in the season.

Spanish Mission came within a neck of causing a shock in the Cocked Hat Stakes over today’s course and distance in May. He made no mistake when given a sublime Jamie Spencer ride to land the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket’s July Meeting. They went off too fast in that 1m5f contest and there’s unlikely to be a repeat of that scenario today.

Jalmoud has done most of his racing this season in France. After finishing runner-up behind smart prospect Headman he ran another solid race when third in the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp. The winner, Japan, could easily end up being the best three-year-old colt over 1m4f so that was a decent effort. He looks the biggest threat.

HERMOSA is where my heart is in the Qatar Nassau Stakes. This well-bred filly didn’t start the season as one of Aidan O’Brien’s main Classic hopes but floating under the radar hasn’t stopped her bagging two.

She made all the running in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and then repeated the success when storming clear in the Irish version.

It wasn’t a surprise to see her go off a red-hot evens favourite for the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot but the widest draw made life tricky. She couldn’t get to the front and had to settle for a stalking role before taking it up a couple of furlongs from home.

That meant she wasn’t able to get away and she was run down by French raider Watch Me. She steps up in trip to 1m2f for the first time and I reckon she will love it.

Her pedigree and run style suggest it’s just what she wants so she looks to have a great chance of extending the excellent record of three-year-olds in this race.

It’s certainly not the first time O’Brien has gone head-to-head with John Gosden and it looks like we’ll get the two great trainers butting heads again as Mehdaayih looks the biggest danger.

She got a really rough trip when disappointing in the Oaks but that’s the only blip on an otherwise impressive record this season. The form of last month’s 1m4f French win might not be too strong for a Group 2 but she does have the gears for this drop in trip.

Maqsad is the other one I like. She clearly failed to see out the 1m4f distance in the Oaks having been impressive in the Pretty Polly at Newmarket. We haven’t got to the bottom of William Haggas’ filly just yet.

4.10

FULL VERSE should be on song for this nursery. He’s bred to be speedy so it was logical he would start over 5f. Despite running well in good novice races on his first two starts his pedigree might be a bit misleading as he looks to possess a good bit of stamina.

Charlie Appleby’s youngster got off the mark at Doncaster but it was hardly impressive.

That nose victory doesn’t put me off as the form has worked out well and I reckon Full Verse is learning all the time. The prospect of a strong pace should be ideal and he should show his class off top weight.

Mark Johnston predictably has a strong hand in a race he has won twice in the last five years. Fred has won twice in novice races on easy ground. He’s bred to be better over much further and he, perhaps, wouldn’t want the ground to dry out too much.

I’m more interested in Governor Of Punjab. He showed a cracking attitude to tough it out from the front at Brighton. Johnston also runs Xcelente and the trio are likely to try to control the pace to their own advantage from the head of affairs.

When Comes Here, Stone Circle and London Calling are others lower down the weights worth keeping an eye on.

RUN with the Cray mob in this fillies’ maiden. CRAYLANDS ran useful Light Blush to half a length in a good maiden at Newmarket’s July Meeting on her debut.

That was a splendid effort for a horse bred to be suited by further in time and that experience should have put a nice edge on Michael Bell’s filly. Light Blush went close in a Sandown Listed contest last week so the form certainly has a solid look to it.

Vividly has races in her. She didn’t get the clearest of runs when third behind So Sharp in a Newbury novice race and she should have improved for that effort. The extra furlong won’t do her any harm either.

Tulip Fields bumped into a useful Alabama Whitman on her debut at Carlisle. That has to go down as a decent starting point but she will certainly come into her own when upped in distance.

No unraced horse has won this race in the last ten years but Aidan O’Brien’s Salsa has to be of interest. Her sister Hermosa won the English and Irish 1000 Guineas this year and another sibling, Hydrangea, was a dual Group 1 winner.

O’Brien has only run one horse in this maiden in recent years and that was 2016 winner Rhododendron. Ruby Power – a half-sister of disqualified 1000 Guineas winner Jacqueline Quest – is another interesting newcomer.

5.20

WE should be flush backing LUFRICIA in the Tatler Handicap. She kicked off this season with a smooth win on all-weather.

That wouldn’t have been the worst novice race ever run at Newcastle so it was disappointing to see her check out to tamely in a Chelmsford Listed contest a couple of weeks later. That race probably came too soon and the step up to 6f clearly didn’t suit as she pulled way too hard.

The return to 5f did the trick at Doncaster last month when she was edged out by a head by subsequent scorer Queens Gift. A 6lbs rise is probably justified and she looks to have races in her off her current handicap rating.

Celsius is on a roll after wins at Haydock and Doncaster. This is a fair step up in grade but there’s no doubt he’s still improving.

Amplify is another on a hat-trick. He toughed it out from the front when dominating a small field at Windsor and repeating those tactics won’t be as easy.

Top Breeze showed a lot of pace before fading into midfield in a hot Newmarket handicap over 6f. He’s certainly worth a shot at the minimum trip.

Good Luck Fox needs the blinkers he wears for the first time to spark him into life but consistent Pink Flamingo should run her race.
