"Many Photos" - The Ashes: Aussies promised ferocious Edgbaston welcome after skipper Paine insists he is not scared of ‘Brummie bearpit’

AUSTRALIA have been promised a ferocious twin assault when The Ashes start today — from fans and Ben Stokes.

Aussie skipper Tim Paine was mocked by the Barmy Army for playing down the patriotic atmosphere at Edgbaston after claiming he could name 15 more intimidating venues.

England captain Joe Root then revealed he expects superstar Stokes to deliver big-style.

The Aussies have not tasted victory at the ground in any game since 2001 while England have won their last 11 matches across all formats in the Brummie bearpit.

But, when asked if there is a more intimidating ground in world cricket, Paine replied: “Than this? I could name you 15.

“England haven’t lost here in how long? I don’t even know. I haven’t looked and it doesn’t concern us.

“When teams come to Australia and go to the Gabba or the Waca, it plays on their minds.

“So I’ve seen it work in reverse. It doesn’t matter if we’re playing at Edgbaston or on the moon, the crowd won’t play a part in deciding this match.”

England’s famous supporters crew, The Barmy Army, tweeted a to-the-point response to Paine: “See you tomorrow, champ.”

At one stage during his press conference, Paine thought he was quoting Winston Churchill but actually used a phrase favoured by madcap former TV presenter David Icke.

And the Aussies are running scared of the UK media by banning their players from reading newspapers during the five-Test series.

Root revealed: “We love coming here because the crowd are in full support of England.

“The noise in the World Cup semi-final against Australia was great and I can see it being similar.”

Root has pushed for months for Stokes to get the vice-captain job back.

The all-rounder missed the 4-0 Ashes defeat in 2017-18 because of his street fight in Bristol.

Root said: “The way Ben stepped up in big moments during the World Cup was him down to a tee.

“He drags people with him as a natural leader.

“I’ve asked for a long time and Ben was made available as vice-captain at the end of the World Cup.

“Ben has his own way of getting his message across — it’s very unique. He always gets a response.

“As you saw in the World Cup, he’s stepped up when given added responsibility. I expect the same in this series.”
