"Many Photos" - UK weather forecast – Met Office says Atlantic HURRICANE may bring heatwave to UK next week

A HUGE Atlantic hurricane could trigger ANOTHER heatwave next week, Met Office forecasters have warned.

The disturbance – spotted today in the mid-Atlantic – could spark a spell of hot weather in Britain if it turns into a fully-fledged cyclone.

A large storm could disrupt the jetstream – a band of wind seven miles up that dictates whether we get warm or cold air.

Met Office forecaster Helen Roberts said: “If there is a hurricane in the Atlantic then theoretically that could disrupt the jetstream and bring a warm spell.

“Having said that, we’re definitely not expecting any heatwaves from this disturbance next week.

“There will be some warm air in the south next week but that’ll have nothing to do with the jestream. Early August is actually looking pretty unsettled at the moment.”

TRAVEL CHAOS

It comes after troops were called in to tackle biblical floods in Yorkshire, after torrential rain caused bridge collapses and crumbling roads.

A month’s rain fell in just four hours yesterday – leaving some homes under a METRE of water.

The Yorkshire 2 Regiment was sent in to help distribute sandbags in Swaledale in a bid to protect homes after heavy rains flooded the area turning rivers into ‘raging torrents’.

Roads in the Yorkshire Dales saw more than 50mm of rain as large hailstones were dumped on the area in what police described as “shocking” travel conditions.

The Met Office has issued a ‘severe’ yellow weather warning for rain for the entire north of England – from Nottingham to the Scottish border – until the end of today.

Another one for thunderstorms is in place for western Scotland.

Showers are likely to continue in northern and eastern parts of the UK into the latter half of the week.

In Wales, Northern Ireland and the South of England it will turn drier and brighter.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: “There’s low pressure that’s dominated coming up from the South West and that’s helping to generate these showers.

“There’s going to be no return of the extreme heat seen last week for a while – while things are going to improve over Thursday and Friday they are going to turn unsettled again during the weekend.

“Showers are expected across the UK, with the South expected to see sticky, humid conditions with temperatures peaking at 27C (80.6F).

“When the sun comes out it could become quite warm in the South – nothing like last week but still a few degrees above average.”

The deluge comes after the Met Office confirmed that last Thursday was Britain’s hottest day on record.

Cambridge University Botanic Garden measured 38.7C (101.7F) – beating the previous UK record of 38.5C (101.3F), set in Kent in 2003.

Meanwhile, the Met Office also confirmed all of the 10 hottest years in the UK’s history have come since 2003.
