"Many Photos" - Channel 4's One Born Every Minute is 'cancelled after ratings plummet'

Channel 4's One Born Every Minute has allegedly been cancelled after a fall in viewership ratings, The Sun reported on Wednesday.

The series has reportedly saw viewing figures plummet to just 600,000 for its last episode aired in May last year, compared to its audience of over 5 million when the show launched in 2010.

Speaking to the publication, a source close to the show claimed: 'It used to be one of Channel 4's most popular formats but it seems as if it's had its day, as viewers have slowly had enough of watching women give birth.

'They've dragged out the story of childbirth for as long as they believe possible and want to start working on newer formats for younger audiences.

'It's a real shame as it has been a huge part of Channel 4. But there is no point flogging a dead horse.'

MailOnline have contacted Channel 4 representatives for comment.

Since its release, the show, which focuses on the activities of maternity units, has been on air for nine seasons and has gone on to win a BAFTA for best factual series.

As well as over 91 episodes of the UK edition, the documentary series has spawned an American and French version of the show.

But that's not all, as BBC2 revealed in March that it would be commissioning its own documentary series about families in the weeks after welcoming newborn babies.

The new show has been given the title The Arrival, and will look at families from 'all walks of life' to present the modern British family on TV.

Of the new show, BBC Commissioning Editor Emma Loach said: 'I'm excited to bring this ambitious new series to BBC Two as families share one of the most extraordinary experiences of their lives with us.

'The Garden Productions has a great track record of taking viewers to the heart of family life and this promises to be a revealing and heart-warming new series.'
