EAMONN Holmes has revealed his school bus was blown up by the IRA during The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
The This Morning host said he was rocked by the explosion happened as a 14-year-old growing up in Belfast in the 1970s.
Holmes, 59, said his head teacher Father Walsh wasn’t sympathetic and still gave him detention for getting to school late.
He said: “Our bus was hijacked on the Antrim Road. And this man wearing a balaclava came on and said, ‘We are commandeering this bus for the Irish Republican Army.’
“He starts sprinkling petrol everywhere so we get off. And they throw a petrol bomb on to the bus and set it on fire.”
He and the his fellow pupils had to walk the next mile-and-a-half to school and when they arrived the gate was closed.
Holmes, who was brought up a Catholic, continued: “I’m puffing and panting and he said, ‘Why are you late, Holmes?’ and I said, ‘Father, our bus was hijacked at the top of the road and it was burnt. We had to run down here and you can see the smoke.’

“And he looks at me and says, ‘Detention’.”
Holmes told the story on the White Wine Question Time Podcast with his pal, Kate Thornton, and joked about how the times had changed.
The Belfast-born star said the “snowflake” generation would have been offered counselling instead of punishment.
