New photo Strictly Come Dancing: Viewers in tears at routine with disabled dancers by Arlene Phillips

Strictly Come Dancing fans were left in tears by the 'stunning' group performance on Sunday night's episode between the professionals and Candoco Dance Company.

The contemporary group, which is made up of both disabled and non-disabled dancers who perform in same sex pairs, executed a moving routine choreographed by former judge Arlene Phillips.

And viewers at home were left calling for the 75-year-old to permanently return to the BBC's ballroom following the 'inclusive and emotional' opening number, danced to David Bowie's Life On Mars.

With both ballroom and Latin styles incorporated into the modern piece, the performers commanded the stage and left fans in tears.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: 'Arlene is the best. That was stunning,' with another adding: 'Bring back Arlene'.

A third fan said: 'Lovely inclusive opening dance, no surprise it was choreographed by Arlene Phillips!'

'Wow Im in tears watching that all-embracing opening dance @StrictlyPros Amazing choreography by @arlenephillips'.

Arlene was dropped from the Strictly line-up nine years ago and replaced by the then 30-year-old Alesha Dixon in 2009, sparking allegations of ageism against the BBC.

The theatre director, who is a patron for Candoco Dance Company, admitted the decision to come back was ‘really hard’.

She told The Sun: ‘I did this because this is where my heart lies. I didn't do this about resolving anything with Strictly. Was it hard for me to say yes? I've got to tell you, it was really hard.'

She said it would be emotional to return and at the time of speaking had not yet decided if she would stay and watch the main event, which was filmed on Saturday evening.

At the time, Phillips' dismissal caused a national controversy, with the then Labour deputy leader and equalities minister Harriet Harman standing up in the Commons and demanding she be reinstated.

The BBC denied ageism was a factor in the line-up change.

In a statement about the Strictly piece Arlene said: 'My vision is that the dancers are drawn together by a strange force from across the universe; fighting, playing, loving.'

Writing on Twitter, the ex-dancer added: 'So proud of these extraordinary dancers who worked so hard.'

During Sunday night's episode, Graeme Swann's Strictly Come Dancing journey came to an end as he became the ninth celebrity to leave the BBC show on Sunday night.

The professional cricketer, 39, and pro partner Oti Mabuse faced Ashley Roberts and her partner Pasha Kovalev in the dance off - despite the ex-Pussycat Doll being one of the strongest dancers in the competition.

Both couples performed their Saturday night routines again with Graeme and Oti dancing a quickstep to Sing Sing Sing by The Andrews Sisters.

While Ashley and Pasha performed a Samba to Hot Hot Hot by Arrow.

After both pairs had danced for the second time the judges delivered their verdicts with all four judges agreeing to save Ashley and Pasha.

Graeme told presenter Tess Daly: 'I'd have voted for Ashley and Pasha as well'.

He gushed: 'This show and what you've got is something special and thank you for letting me be a part of it'

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.50pm on BBC1.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
