BREAKING out in spots or battling acne can be frustrating and annoying – especially if you thought they’d be long gone once you reached adulthood.
If you’ve tried every remedy under the sun and are still getting spots, take note as a skin expert has revealed the reason could be closer to home.
Consultant dermatologist Dr. Anjali Mahto revealed one cause for facial spots which may be overlooked by people.
And the answer is your phone.
Dr Mahto, author of The Skincare Bible, shared some home truths with Refinery29.
She said: “Spots on the forehead may be related to heavy waxes or sprays being applied to the hair when styling – known as ‘pomade acne’…
“And use of heavy, oil-based foundations can lead to blocked pores, otherwise known as ‘acne cosmetica’.
“Spots on one cheek could be related to mobile phone use, where a dirty screen surface, combined with heat and occlusion, may stimulate the oil glands.”
While most of us know or can guess slathering our faces in foundation probably isn’t good for our skin, turns out our mobiles could be affecting it too.
If you’ve got spots on only one cheek, and are often on the phone on that ear, it could be the culprit.
Numerous studies have shown phones are incredible dirty and usually follow us everywhere – even into the loo.
And it seems spending hours with your phone stuck to your ear may inadvertently create the perfect conditions for spots to thrive, with breakouts fuelled from the heat and grime from our screens.
So if you’re worried excessive use of your phone could be contributing to bad skin, try using the other ear, cleaning your screen or investing in a hands-free device.
