THEY say it’s better to be born lucky than rich.
I wouldn’t have a Scooby about Kieran Shoemark’s bank balance, but he definitely had the old four-leaf clover on his side aboard Roger Charlton’s Lady Adelaide at Kempton on Wednesday night.
This filly was fitter than Rocky and looked set to win with plenty in hand before Shoemark made it
squeaky-bum time for punters by easing down prematurely and being joined on the line by Audarya.
It was a dopey move and I reckon Kieran was properly relieved when the judge called the picture in his
favour.
Luck rather than judgement saved the kid here and hopefully Charlton or a Steward had a quiet
word in his shell-like after the dust settled.
A day later and Finley Marsh was at the same trick. Richard Hughes’ three-pound claimer stood up in his irons two jumps from the line on Majorette, who went down by a nose to the well bet Deeds Not Words (9-2 to 3-1) in a 6f handicap.
Finley did the decent thing and held his hands up when the Stewards gave him a tug, so hopefully it will be a lesson learnt.
LATEST IN HORSE RACING
Trying to beat Nicky Henderson over jumps at Kempton is Mission Impossible and the great man rattled-up a hat-trick with three well bet horses there on Monday.
Pick of his trio was Epatante (11-10 to 8-15), who pulled like a train before lagging up in the opening 2m novice hurdle.
Only a proper horse can quicken that sharply after running with the choke out and she’ll take some stopping in mares’ races.
By the way, wasn’t it disappointing to see Hendo scratch Altior from the big 2m chase at Cheltenham on Sunday.
Apparently the horse is ready to roll but sits this out to wait for the Tingle Creek at Sandown in three weeks.
Bearing in mind he sees less action than the fire brigade in Atlantis, surely the horse could have lined-up for both races.

Favourite backers took a pasting over jumps at Lingfield on Tuesday, where Olly Murphy’s General Bux (9-4 to 13-8) hit the deck after being a strong whisper for the 2m4f handicap chase.
Murphy has only been training five minutes but he learnt the game from Gordon Elliot and already boasts a list of owners straight out of Who’s Who.
He’ll have been gutted to see General Bux fall when going best, but both horse and trainer will bounce back and should be followed.
SATURDAY SELECTION
ADDEYBB (2.45 Lingfield) looked a star in the spring and can get his career back on track now he moves up in trip.
This card featured the annual hurdle race for Flat jockeys and, judging by the ashen faces and knocking knees, once a year is just about enough for the little fellas.
Glad to report all the jocks came home safe and sound, although I did hear the valets had to work overtime cleaning their breeches that evening!
James Doyle has a smart good book of rides at Lingfield today, led by ADDEYBB in the Listed Churchill Stakes (2.45).
He’ll appreciate the step-up in trip and drop in class after tackling top class milers and should have too many gears for this field.

Hayden Panettiere
Size: 8

To achieve her kick-ass figure, Hayden – who plays cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes – follows the ‘quartering’ rule. She eats only a quarter of the food on her plate, then waits 20 minutes before deciding whether she needs to eat again.
Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”

SATC star Kim swears by gym sessions with Russian kettle bells (traditional cast-iron weights) and the South Beach Diet to give her the body she wants. To avoid overeating, Kim has a radical diet trick – squirting lemon juice on her leftovers – so she won’t carry on picking.
Kim says: “I am no super-thin Hollywood actress. I am built for men who like women to look like women.”
