Derwent and Ashopton in Derbyshire were flooded in the 1940s to create Ladybower Reservoir.

But the summer heatwave lowered its water levels, and the eerie remains of Derwent were visible again — attracting thousands of visitors. However authorities are furious after vandals daubed graffiti over them — with names “Cheryl” and “Steve” scratched into historic brickwork.

Steve Rowe, of the nearby Edale Mountain Rescue Team, said: “There’s a fair amount of graffiti and defacement on the ruins.

“It’s a huge part of our history and now Cheryl and Steve have scratched their names in the rock.

“We need to look after it.”

People have also been picking stones out of the brickwork and throwing them into the mud.

Ladybower Reservoir was used to train the Dambusters in World War Two.

Yesterday officials warned the huge number of visitors to be careful as several have recently got stuck. Rescuers said the mud was like “rice pudding with skin on. It looks solid but it’s not”.
