"Many Photos" - UK weather forecast – Britain struck by violent thunderstorms and lightning as country braces for ‘hottest day ever’

BRITAIN was struck by violent thunderstorms and lightning last night as the UK braces for what could be its hottest day ever this week.

The skies were illuminated with arcs of lightning as powerful electrical storms hit large swathes of the country during the sweltering heatwave.

A UK-wide “severe” yellow warning was issued for thunderstorms as the wild weather brought the potential to cause power cuts and travel chaos today.

Incredible footage shows the night skies being filled with forks of lightning as the storms rolled in.

Thunderstorms moved into southern and western areas late on Tuesday evening, with the Met Office issuing a warning for most of England, Wales and Scotland until 9am today.

The Met Office said there is a “small chance” of damage to property from lightning strikes, hail or strong winds and driving conditions could be affected by spray and standing water.

Surrey Police tweeted a video of what it called “a great lightning show” as some Twitter users tweeted to say they had been woken up by the thunderstorms.

It comes after temperatures across England exceeded 30C (86F) on Tuesday.

In Kent, where the temperature soared to 32C (89.2F), more than 100 firefighters, 20 fire engines and a variety of specialist support vehicles worked to control a fire on the Lydd Ranges.

The mercury could soar to 38C tomorrow and smash the current July record of 36.7C recorded at Heathrow Airport in 2015.

There is also a chance the temperature could beat all-time UK record of 38.5C (101.3F) which was recorded in Faversham, Kent, in August 2003.

But the extremely hot temperature, which might feel like 44C according to some forecast models, will affect train services.

When in direct sunshine, the metal rails can get as hot as 50 degrees, Southeastern rail said.

Railway lines can buckle in hot temperatures as they expand and start to curve.

The train company has imposed speed restrictions to “reduce the chance of rails buckling in the heat”.

But with sweltering heat and slower speeds, travel chaos is expected as Brits who do need to travel, bustle to get on to services.

The company said: “We strongly advise you to avoid travelling, if you can.”

In London, meanwhile, police were searching for three people who have gone missing in the River Thames.

The Metropolitan Police said a swimmer went missing at Shadwell Basin on Tuesday evening, a second at Waterloo Bridge and a third near Kingston High Street.

The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service warned people not to leave fans on overnight, or if they are out of the house.

Dr Sam Hampton, a post-doctoral research associate at the Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford, advised people to wear “lighter, loose-fitting clothing before cranking up the air conditioner”.

The expert added: “If necessary, air-conditioners should only be run when all the windows are closed.”
