"Many Photos" - North Korea fires an 'unidentified projectile' from near the city of Wonsan

North Korea has fired an unidentified projectile from an area near Wonsan, on North Korea's eastern coast, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff declined to elaborate after making the announcement early on Thursday morning local time.

A U.S. official also confirmed a 'short range' projectile was fired.

The news comes after the South said the rogue state had fired off two missiles from a base on the north-west coast in May.

Experts said there was 'no doubt' that the weapons, which are said to have flown around 260 miles and 167 miles respectively, were missiles. 

North Korea last conducted a major missile test in November 2017 when it flight-tested an intercontinental ballistic missile. 

The weapons demonstrated potential capability to reach deep into the U.S. mainland. 

Since then Kim has said the North would not test nuclear devices or ICBMs although diplomacy has stalled.

Satellite images which emerged from the North's nuclear site in Yongbyon in April sparked fears that Pyongyang was preparing bomb fuel.   

Sanctions against the North over its nuclear and missiles programmes remain in place.   

Experts have estimated the size of North Korea's nuclear arsenal at anywhere between 20 and 60 warheads.
