PHIL FODEN is above Lionel Messi as the “most talented” player Pep Guardiola has worked with, according to the Manchester City manager.
Having taken charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich before landing in Eastlands, the Spaniard has a huge array of stars on his portfolio.
From Lionel Messi to Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Thierry Henry in Spain – and then the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery in Germany – Guardiola has a fair selection to pick from.
But it is Foden, 19, who takes the honour.
The City coach told reporters on Friday: “He has everything to become one of the best players.
“I have said many times in press conferences, but maybe not said it in front of him, Phil is the most, most, most talented player I have ever seen in my career as a manager.
“His only problem is sometimes his manager doesn’t put him in the starting XI.
“He deserves all the minutes, but as well you know in which team he’s playing, there are competitive players. It’s not easy.
“But he is open minded, he works incredibly hard [in] every training session and he knows how I perceive him.
“He knows completely that I am here to help him as much as possible to become what he is and I am pretty sure both of us will get there.”
Foden became the youngest-ever recipient of a Premier League winners’ medal in 2017/18 having first come through in that campaign’s pre-season, earning huge praise from Guardiola.
Last season saw him become further integrated into the City first-team.

Across all competitions, the English playmaker appeared 26 times and scored seven goals.
That form made him a key player at the European Under-21 Championship but, despite scoring in England’s opening defeat to France, he was dropped in a move that earned boss Aidy Boothroyd huge criticism.
As Guardiola admits, Foden will want to continue increasing his game time as City begin their quest for a third-straight title next month.
