"Many Photos" - Firefighters try to rescue trapped man from incoming tide

A man has been saved from drowning off the Norfolk coast after a dramatic five-hour rescue operation in which emergency services sawed through a rock to rescue him.

The unnamed person got stuck between two rocks in the sea near Sheringham, Norfolk while the tide was coming in on Sunday evening.

Emergency services were called just after 5.30pm and RNLI crews were dispatched alongside Coastguard Rescue Teams and ambulances.

They later confirmed he had been saved after spending five hours in the water.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard earlier said crews were assisting the man by holding his head above the water and gave him breathing apparatus and a life jacket.

Stuart Facey, who was walking his dog when the Coastguard arrived, said: 'I saw someone obviously stuck in the rocks, it was high tide and water was coming over him so it was a very scary situation.'

'I've seen people climb into the cavities in the rocks and the problem is that even if you are able to move a rock to free someone who is stuck, another can fall into its place; it can be a life or death situation.'

Zach Pedley from HM Coastguard said: 'This is a very frightening experience for this man.

'Thankfully someone knew to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard which meant we could send the right response immediately.

'Everyone is working together at the scene to keep him calm and safe as we effect the rescue.'

A statement on the Coastguard's website also read: 'HM Coastguard is currently coordinating the rescue of a man who got his leg trapped in the rocks while the tide was coming in.

'Although the water has come in a fair way, the emergency responders are on scene helping to reassure him and holding his head about the water. He has also been given breathing apparatus and a lifejacket.

'Fire officers are currently working to cut through the rock to rescue the man.'

At 8.40pm the RNLI confirmed that the rescue was still continuing.

According to the Met Office, low tide is expected at around 11pm.
