VACUUMING is a crucial part of keeping any house tidy and is part of the weekly, or even daily, cleaning routine.
But a cleaning expert has revealed we may have been vacuuming the wrong way this whole time, and it could be making our home dirtier as well as making hay fever worse for sufferers.
Joanne Archer, from Expert Home Tips, claims it’s not how often we vacuum which is the problem, but rather how efficiently we do it.
Whilst some of us may drag a vacuum around the room quickly, and others like to get into the corners and use all the attachments, there’s a key step we’ve all been missing.
Joanne explained that as the fibres in rugs and carpets are flexible, we need to vacuum them from every angle to get rid of all the dirt.
And if we don’t, grime and other nasties will fester, including pollen.
How to properly vacuum your carpet
- First dust and shake off dirt from sofas and blankets
- Then vacuum your floor in a standard back and forward motion
- Make sure you cover every inch of the carpet
- Then switch and go over it again from left to right
For anyone with allergies, even if you religiously vacuum your carpet you could be leaving pollen behind.
Joanne explained: “Carpet fibres twist round in all directions, so it’s important to vacuum each fibre from as many angles as possible.
“If you only vacuum in one or two directions, you’ll leave crumbs, pollen, dead skin and dust behind.
“You might not see it, but that’s because it’s trapped under the fibres.”
To make sure you get all the dirt and dust trapped in the material, you need to vacuum from multiple angles.

She added: “It would be pretty difficult to vacuum every inch of carpet from every 360-degree angle, so the best way to optimize your vacuuming is to add one extra step.”
Joanne advises going across a room in a traditional forward and back motion.
But when you’re done, turn the machine and then go from left to right – picking up all the trapped bits of dirt.
Joanne added: “Another crucial mistake that people make when cleaning is not working from top to bottom.
“You should always leave the vacuuming last, making sure to dust off any surfaces, tidy up, shake off blankets and remove any cobwebs first.”
