CAR manufacturers are taking to the skies to get parts delivered to their production lines.
Products, including steering wheels and airbags, are being carried by drones to help slash delivery times.
Spanish automaker SEAT has begun airlifting equipment from a nearby supplier to its Martorell plant – just outside of Barcelona – in a bid to speed up its manufacturing process.
The equipment is stored in a carbon-fibre capsule and then loaded onto the drone using an electromagnet.
It then takes off from a launch pad for the 1.5-mile trip to the SEAT assembly workshop.
The drone, which has a 1.7-metre diameter, can fly almost 100 metres above ground level at speeds up to 25mph.
It takes just 14 minutes for the products to be delivered to the factory, a process which can take up to 90 minutes by truck.
Since launching the drone delivery system, several flights have taken place each day.
The project is being supervised by the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency.
Dr. Christian Vollmer, SEAT vice-president for production and logistics, said: “With this innovation, we are boosting ‘Industry 4.0’ and will be more efficient, agile and competitive, as well as much more sustainable.
“Drone transport is going to revolutionise logistics, as for example in the case of SEAT, where it will reduce part delivery time by 80 per cent.”

Toni Caballero, TSA centre pilot, said: “The most important aspect was that the drone had a large load capacity and to streamline its construction to the maximum.
“In addition to its six motors, we’ve equipped it with three GPS, six batteries and three IMU (Inertial Measurement Units), which are the inner workings of the drone.”
Metropolitan Police recently announced it will use a £80,000 drone to catch speeding drivers in London.
